My mother would love you, Lydia. One of her pet hates is "heat rises...."

Thirteen years of trying to persuade GCSE students not to say "heat rises".... or "hot air rises" when they're answering a question about water. :) We do our best. They do lose marks for it.

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

My darling Mama was similarly trying to din it into geography pupils.

She did enjoy a carefully-labelled graph marked with "An omaly", though, esp. when it went on, "the omaly shows..."

If something so easy and so cheap made so much difference, everyone would do it.

But they don't because its a vast exaggeration, just like saying 27% of the heat in a house goes out of the letterbox.

I dunno. Sometimes people don't do things because it's too different from what the Joneses are doing.

When Mrs Z lived in the US we noticed how people would hang plastic sheets over windows as a cheap double-glazing substitute.

Never seen anyone do that over here (except us until we got real double-glazing). Only place I've seen that sold it was in Walton-on-Thames which served the big American community around Weybridge.

My mate who's a heating engineer swears by it and also by the foil behind radiatior on external walls business.

they recommend plastic, clingfilm and bubble wrap for windows on the OS board. :)

I just flicked on to the tv and saw Gok and wondered what would happen if they sent Gok to see clothing sweat shops if that would make interesting tv.

I went to Uni in the north east in the late 80's early 90's and lots of people did it up there at that time. Not just the students.

Brilliant. Here are some of my favourites (all 100% genuine from work I have marked myself):

Q The (coal-fired) power station is not 100% efficient. In what form is most energy lost?
    A Nuclear energy mgh

Q The (coal-fired) power station is not 100% efficient. In what form is most energy lost?
    A Gravitational

We have day and night because it takes time for the sun to go all the way round the earth.

People use fire ... to smelt oar ...

Q Why does iron not rust if it is tin-plated?
A Because it is made of stainless steel.

Q Why does iron not rust if it is tin-plated?
A Because it is unreactive and non-toxic e.g. baked beans which are made from steel, coated on both sides with a fine layer of tin.

Q Name a part of the electromagnetic spectrum that causes cancer.
    A Ultra-violent.

My mum did that all through our childhood. It works. But it is not sightly.:D

(She had a massive victorian house, with a lot of old windows, and no money to replace them).

When i moved here way back in the last century (1990) the house had (Everest) secondary glazing.

It was probably pretty efficient but had to go, even though there were probably more sensible things to spend that money on at that time.

They did make great cold frame covers which was all the justification i needed. :A
