History buffs, can I please recommend this book? Not Civil War, but highly enjoyable nevertheless:

Yes, it's a great book - I loved it....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0

Alex Garland - not heard of the book you've just read, but I think he wrote "The Beach"?
Charles I v Cromwell.
Yes, the same Alex Garland who wrote the beach - I also have the beach, & should get round to reading it...:oIt's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -

I know some history, although not enough. I'm learning a surprising amount more by watching Horrible Histories with my kids, though.
The horrible histories stuff is fantastic. They're doing a stage tour you know:

The King Stephen v Matilda / Maud war is more interesting!
I'll dig out some of my books about Cromwell, and let you know....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
BTW who won the fantasy football?
I did
As the Inspector has more important stuff to be getting on with, I may try to set up a league this year.Did you read that book The Sett that I put up a while back? I am just reading it again, forgot how weird it was, I noticed that it kicks off not far from you with Badger Baiters in Kinver Wood near Kingsford. I can't believe it is a true story although it does name check real people and organisations.
Edit: I never realised that Staffordshire stretched that far South, A bit like Southern Ireland stretching that far north.

I didn't - but it is on my list of books to get around birthday/christmas time.
When the boundaries were re-drawn in 1979, stourbridge was moved from staffs into dudley mbc. If you ever want to offend someone from stourbridge, tell them they're from dudley!
Kinver etc is the southern tip of south staffordshire, a wierd area of villages dog legging around stafford, wolverhampton and dudley. It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -

I think that is the period Cadfael was set in.'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. A single market without barriers visible or invisible giving you direct and unhindered access to the purchasing power of over 300 million of the worlds wealthiest and most prosperous people' Margaret Thatcher0
