As DSs mum you know what is best for him, there's enough going on in his little life at the moment as it is without potential upset with the dogs. I can understand that she might feel that she wants to see him if she's been close to him in the past, after all she's been a "step mum" of sorts.
Adults can cope with their feelings and will have to do what's best for DS and I would be reacting in the same way as you. Maybe a call direct to her with, this is what's going on (re school and referrals) and this is why you want to keep things calm and stable, would be best, you can get your point of view across and she hears it direct from you and to a twisted version from his parents?
I must admit that when my ex started the "game playing" I made it clear that there was one option and one option only, my way, or the high way. Needless to say its now been 7 years since he saw DDs. Im all for Dads being an important part of their kids lives but on the terms that enefit the kids, not those that !!!! them up!
Hugs to you havering to put up with this on top of everything else x
