Florida & New York Holiday Query

I have a big birthday ending in a zero next July and I'm planning on a holiday to Florida and hoping to tie in a trip to New York at the same time.
Can any of you US expert or anyone who has planned this type of holiday advise my best way of doing this? Would I be best buying a one way ticket to one and a return from the other and a single internal flight between the two. Or would it be more economical to buy a return from the UK to either airport and a return internal flight in the US?
There will be myself, hubby and two teenagers so obviously I'm looking for the most econimal way of doing this.
Do you think diy flights and then book hotels seperate is the best way to go or would I be better buying a package? I only plan on having a car in Florida not NY.
I've been to both places on holiday previously but not on the same trip. I'm hoping to spend four nights in NY and the rest would be in Florida and would be happy flying to either Orlando or Tampa. Not bothered either which leg of the holiday comes first.
Any advice on planning and booking this gratefully received.

Single tickets are VERY expensive, Have a look at KAYAK/or Expedia and choose MULTICITY for flights, then key in destinations and dates.

Note they are not showing full July flights 2012 yet, you will have to wait a few weeks as they seem to only do 1 year in advance.

However a quick look at June, London/NYC/Orlando/London on expedia comes up at £633ish per person direct flights, - depart LHR and return to LGW. Also pick midweek flights, that will also help on costs. (The Orlando Gatwick direct flight shows as Continental, but is operated by Virgin.)

Rather than start a new thread on the New York element of this - I am looking to fly myself, the missus and our 10yr old to Newyork mnext year - last week may / 1st week June.

never done this before, so any advice on the cheapest way to do it would be appreciated - dates flexible.

    Cheers

Have a look at the weather details and perhaps consider if you'd like it hot and very sticky in New York in July.
Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.

Thanks all for the replies I want to go at this time next year, at present when I've looked on Kayak I cant book a return flight so I will re-visit in a week or so.
I have to go in July as I want to be away for my actual birthday so I'll just have to prepare myself for the heat and humidity in NY.
