Cash on collection is not possible as the person who is interested lives 9 hours away, which of course is why they asked if it could be posted.

As its under £50, surely sending it 1st class recorded means I am then covered in terms of proving by trackable means & of course I'll keep my proof of posting.

Recorded rarely tracks so it is up to you whether you bother using it. As Crowqueen says with a COP you are covered up to £46 if you need to make a claim from RM.

If you do use recorded it needs to show delivery to win a paypal claim, and that online proof rarely happens in many areas.

    Are you sure?

Paypal for non ebay sales is not all that safe.
It is exactly the same as for Ebay as long as goods or services is chosen as the item being paid for. The seller pays the same fees and gets the same seller protection. The buyer gets the same buyer protection.

Where you have no protection is paying for something "as a gift".

See how ebay/paypal have brainwashed people into thinking the safest payment method (BT) is somehow unsafe....

BT is unsafe for the buyer but rock solid for the seller.
