Maybe think about getting an Athlon64 x2 instead of a Pentium D.

You could get an Athlon64 3800+ x2 for a little bit more.

It'll perform better, run cooler and use less power. Plus it's a very mature and stable platform. It's retail so will come with a heatsink/fan.

And then combine it with a motherboard like:

It's a highly rated motherboard, MSI make very good AMD boards. Should only cost you around £25 extra, but would be money well spent. Plus if you really want you could get an after market cooler (around £25) and overclock it. You then just need to spend £25-30 or so on an budget graphics card.

I've got a Core Duo 2 now. Gave my Athlon 64 to my brother. Was one hell of a stable system, didn't have a single problem which is quite rare. Plus it ran very cool, which meant I could run the fans at lower voltages (slower speeds) making my pc nice and quiet.

If you really want superior value for money. Spend a little more, get a Core 2 Duo E6300. Buy an after market cooler and overclock it. They're very easy to overclock, and can perform as well as a £220+ cpu, for the price of around £125. You'd need to spend around £110 extra though (inc motherboard and cooler) which may not be feasible.

  • He could do that, but at the drop of a hat, he could sell his pentium D and go core 2 like you and i have. Even if he waited now, saved up £40 he could get a E6300 and he'd be laughing.

Lol, yeah just edited my post as you posted.

Exactly what I have. Got my E6300 running at 2.8Ghz no problems. Nice and stable.

  • The motherboard wouldn't hold him back and if he set the RAM to a divider he should be fine. The S3 is a fine overclocking board
