T-mobile'd Desire in Sweden and US

Hi, I'm shortly going to the US for a few days and then Sweden for a few days also.
I'm on a monthly T-mobile contract, and would really like to be able to at least use google-maps while I'm in these places (I'll use hotel wifi for skype and email etc). I could do with being able to use the phone in the US.
Do I need to bother with a local sim for US? What can I do to sort me out? Does google maps need a sim working?
Thanks in advance!

Google maps will download as it goes, which could land you with a BIG bill.
Local sim for the US would be the way to go. Most drugstores sell them (CVS, Walgraves) or Target or Walmart.
They're by the tills on cards as a rule. Just check that they have a data allowance and that your phones unlocked to take any sim. . .0 -

thanks Jon, any recommendations on where to get my phone unlocked?? Does it matter that I'm on a contract here?0 -
Doesn't matter a hoot that you're in contract.
Your network may unlock for free, depending on which network and how long you've been in contract.
If they won't or want to change more then you want to pay, then some can be unlocked for free. Others can be unlocked by local phone shops for a little or a lot depending on which phone it it. . .0 -
T-mobile charged me £15 to unlock my phone earlier this year. I rang up Customer Services and they texted me the code within minutes.
They now do boosters for using the internet in Europe which may be a viable option for your Swedish journey.0
