Speakers out of warranty

  • - are you sure you haven't accidentally switched it ' off ' at the AMP ?
    - tried turning it up ? .. .. if the input voltage is too low, it goes into standby mode
    - the Kef setup sheet say set vol to max !

What sort of AMP are you driving it with ?

This reminds me of a similar situation when my £400 laptop broke down just out of warranty: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/3251436

In the end I sold it on Ebay with the fault for about £160 rather than go through the risk and hassle of getting it inspected to decide whether it was a manufacturing fault which I could claim a free repair for under the SOGA. You're in a bit of a different situation with your £1000 speakers though, so worth pushing the shop for a free repair under the SOGA I'd say.

    Thanks everyone.

I think it's an active one as it has its own power supply. My husband did check the fuse, power supply etc (he's an IT manager so not totally incapable! ;-) )

We took it back to the shop yesterday, bit annoying as the only parking nearby was a goods vehicle loading bay so I had to stay with the car whilst my husband took it in. Fortunately the man in the shop agreed that it was a bit much it breaking only 13 months in so they haven't charged us anything (yet!). The man who does repairs wasn't in, so he will refer it to the manufacturer next week to see if the manufacturer will repair it for free. I'd told my husband all the SOGA stuff to say...

Just to let the people who helped out with advice know - the manufacturer repaired the subwoofer free of charge in the end and we picked it up from the shop today. Seems to be working fine now. :-)

The actual wholesale price of the woofer may be as little as £25. The rest of the cost is design, marketing etc. So offering a goodwill fix makes perfect sense for the manfr.

Read the thread. The OP said earlier it's a KEF.

KEF PASSIVE products are guaranteed for 5 years against faulty materials and workmanship by KEF themselves.
    Here http://www.kef.com/gb/support/warranty
As suggested in another post, has something external caused the speaker to go "pop"? KEF have been a good and respected speaker manufacturer for many years and I personally wouldn't think there was a fault in the actual sub-woofer. Although nothing's always perfect.
I'd contact KEF and see what their take on this is. Especially about the "???"!

Thanks for all of this. How long should I expect a set of speakers to last?
For passive speakers, pretty much forever I'd have thought. There's nothing much that can go wrong (unless you do something silly like overload them). Mine are 34 years old.
