    Why can't they?

because most shops would then say
"sure, same price as before sir?" that or "we've put that back for sorting sorry you'll have to find one out there" (meaning shop floor)

and yes i have worked in retail and yes this is what we'd say as people would forever try it on.

I know somebody that would do this...see an item cheaper then the next day return the item, waste an hour or 2, then buy the cheaper one...

... only problem being she would drive the short distance to the city center, spend 15minutes trying to find free sidestreet parking, then during the hour before going back bought a coffee -- all to "save" a few quid... :). Never did understand the logic :)

Some people see the pennies as being more important than the pounds.
Others have a better financial/work/life balance and see the bigger picture :)

But there would be nothing to stop the customer from saying, "i've changed my mind i'll buy it back," or from buying an identical one from the shelf, would there?

There have been several occasions when I have returned items to department stores, because I have either changed my mind on the colour, style or the size doesn't fit, got a refund or credit note, replaced the item with a different size etc. and kept the difference.

Last month I returned a pair of trousers to Marks and Spencer, because I have lost a bit of weight since I bought them and not got around to using them. I selected a smaller size from the rack, the cashier at customer services, informed me that the new pair were in a sale and credited my card with the difference.
The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark

yes but thats different to returning the original item and trying to buy it back immediately from the same sales person

If the price went up, would you be so quick to return to the store and give them the difference?

Theres always someone that trots that drivel out.

If the OP knows that the item in question has gone into the sale, it suggests that they have been seen in store by the OP? If still within the 28 days, buy a reduced one and THEN give the full price one back for a full refund ... Whether it's worth the hassle depends on the discount.
  • Legally there is nothing stopping you from a refund if they agree to refund you the full amount of the receipt.

There is nothing that can stop them from reselling it to you at the new price.

If the seller refuses to sell to you then you can make a complaint and ask why it was not sold, and you can make a big deal of it, but the seller does hold the right (to some extent) to who it wants to sell a item to.

Go back in a little later or tell a friend to pick it up for you. record the attendant on your camera phone if they are not selling you something if it is a big store then they will get told off.
I have done this and sent the recording in an email, and noted that it was a public area and therefore I recorded, the company was nice enought to follow it up, and gave me a discount and also the option to buy the product at the discount price.

That is why a receipt is necessary.

I don't think it's entirely drivel, as it makes the point that any legal right to money back due to a post-purchase price change would have to work both ways.
