In which case they maybe in breach of the law. Unless they make it clear that the prices quited are for business users, then the prices quoted must include VAT. Simply included the words "VAT is not included," is insufficient. The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0

I agree with bod - find another venue.
You are already not happy about their business methods and are also doubtful about how much they value their existing customers.
This will mean that on the big day, before you reach the reception stage, you will have niggling doubts about the service you will receive. If even the smallest thing goes wrong, the effect will be magnified because of that doubt and a minor mishap, like a mark on a plate, will be magnified out of all proportion. If everything else goes like clockwork, that little niggle will be the one you remember for years afterwards.
You will have enough concerns about possible mishaps on the day, you don't need another one, wondering if the reception will be up to standard.0 -

Doeasn't that very much depend on what you would be getting for your sixty pounds a head? If the OP wants to spend that amount, surely that is her decision. The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -

Your completely right and totally agree with you.
However, it is very hard to find what you originally thought was your perfect venue, again. But then is it really our perfect venue with the potential headaches they could cause.
Thank you for all of your help.0 -

Ofcourse it doesn't -- what your implying is tax evasion!
I don't see the problem here, they have advised op of the price including VAT BEFORE going ahead with the booking, op can now accept that or walk away! Its not like she has paid a deposit just to be billed a higher amount.0 -

I would be using this issue as a negotiation tool. Tell them that you are concerned that you were given misleading prices on their price list and that they should have included VAT. You might want to mention that HMRC/Trading Standards might not be very pleased about this practice. The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -

In what way would that be Tax evasion??
The issue is that they never informed us that food and drink did not include VAT. When we were budgeting to see how much the wedding would come to, we never factored in VAT on food and Drink. So as you can imagine a hike in the total cost was not expected, thus my reason for questioning it.0 -

But the do the regulations not state that all prices directed at consumers must include VAT and aren't there penalties for not doing so?The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0
