Europcar Advice, nightmare!!

We hired a car from Europcar on the 4th July for 5 days. On collection my husband noted the few scratches on the car and the guy told him not to worry about them as they were just normal wear and tear. We had a great holiday and returned the car on the friday night at 8pm, the office was closed so my husband left the keys at the desk, they guy he left them with said everything was fine and that was that.
Today i noticed on checking the bank that £550 has been taken out from Europcar (making us overdrawn, when we have no overdraft!!) My husband has phoned them and they have told him the car is completley damaged with scratch marks all over it, and the indicators, window wipers wtc are not functioning. He has told them the car was dropped off in the same condition it was picked up in and that there was nothing wrong with the electrics. We have no idea what to do, we have no proof that the car was ok, the office was closed even though the time was agreed to drop off at 8pm when we collected it. I don't think we are ever going to be to prove anything. Does anybody have any advice?
TIA
* edited to add, the car is an 11 plate and has done 11554 miles, i would have thought any problems with the indicators, wipers etc would be covered under warranty, if they are as they say "broken".
