How about Croatia? We've just returned from a two weeks holiday there, and it's absolutely stunning.

The sea is amazing, crystal clear and the most beautiful blue colour. The people are wonderful, very friendly and really appreaciate you being there, in a way that we had never experienced in Western European countries like Spain and France, where some people resent the tourists. There are many restaurants and bars around, but no drunks sprawled around anywhere! The price of everything there is so much cheaper than most other places in Europe, when we eating out the main meals were about £4-5 each (decent portions as well), and 500ml of beer (about 1 pint) was in most places the equivalent of £1.20-1.50!

The only drawback of Croatia was the fact that most beaches there are not sandy, but shingly or rocky, but then if the beaches were sandy, the sea wouldn't quite be as crystal clear!

We absolutely loved it, and would go back there tomorrow if we could. The price of everything was really cheap, although if you go in the high season, the prices are probably going to be higher, but that's probably true everywhere! Good luck with your choice!

I would recommend Malta. Only 3 hrs away, some nice beaches and loads of history. Weather is fab, and as long as you get a decent hotel, you wont get any drunks. Paceville/St Julians is more lively, but there are other areas which are more quiet.
You could hire a car and get round the whole island in a day!

Forgot to add, you can also take a trip to Gozo, the sister island which is more sedate, and take a boat trip to the Blue Grotto-bliss when not busy!
