lose connection and add on laptop

Options
Hi, really hope someone can help. I did try to follow some of the threads on here already about poor wireless connection but got very lost and didn't understand all the technical terms so I'm sorry for starting off a thread about this.

We keep losing our connection to the internet - has been happening for a while but keeps getting worse. Can be on for half an hour and it will have lost its connection every few minutes and is very frustrating.

I have AOL silver, have a Belkin Wireless G Desktop Network Card and a Netgear router. I am completely untechnical so don't know and can't work out which is the problem. Just keep getting 'goodbye' from AOL and then right click on the connection icon in the bottom right to repair connection, which it does but then just keeps losing it again.

I've been in the Belkin and netgear sites and found them very unhelpful. I can't even manage to access information about the belkin wireless card in my own computer.

I've been in touch with AOL and done all the checks, they just say I should upgrade.

If anyone has the patience to explain to me in untechnical terms what I should do I would be very grateful.

To complicate matters further I've just got a laptop for my daughter for christmas and need to work out how to connect that into the system but maybe I should concentrate on the first problem ...

Many thanks :)

It may be due to someone else setting up a wireless network nearby, which is causing interference to yours. You could install Netstumbler to see if this is the case. Can you connect to the router using an Ethernet cable to establish that the problem only occurs when using wireless?

AOL telling to upgrade is ridiculous advice!

Thanks both, I will have a go with those suggestions. Sorry didn't respond before - have been unwell.

yeah, dont upgrade, thats really bad advice, does this only happen in one location or if you move around does it reconnect on its own elsewhere in the house ?

Wireless is a lot like radio, some places you get good reception and some places you dont (the most comfy chair in the house is usually the dead spot in my experience!!)

Also, have you made sure the drivers are up to date on your wireless card and the router, that may not help but it rarely hurts.
