Morning all. Closer....have disabled/fixed what you said on trend micro hijack this. Also uninstalled windows live as don't use messenger. Could not uninstall enhancement pack so going by a 'google' search I've re-named all the files in the program files for this. Too scared to delete it!
I'm keeping Winpatrol as it has helped me stop virus's before they download.
Ok.......start-up commit-total-158356, limit 873140, peak 192332. Will re-post this after I've been working a few hours & will report back on speed etc. To be honest I don't use memory hungry things-like watching tv etc...I'll occaisionally download music, video etc but do this when I'm not working/using pc for anything else....so paying for extra ram is probably a waste of money as you say! Am defragging now as well & will run a full malware bytes scan soon. Will also say on a Sunday am use tuneup utilities.
Closed.....anything else you see thats easy for a novice like me to remove?
Thanks for all your help!!! I'm a travel Agent by trade-so PM me if you need a cheap holiday & I can try & return the favour!!
***EDIT-The 'windows is increasing your page file/virtual memory too low' has come up during a malware bite full scan-guess this is normal??
****EDITT EDIT....Closed-with peak RAM still quite a bit over installed ram (I think)...worth a 512/1gb stick? Everything else is deffo improved.0 -
and (if I remember rightly - I've rarely used it) the Vista/7 firewall is a bit better but doesn't give you much control.
The Win 7 firewall is very comprehensive with full configuration of outbound and inbound rules by app, service, domain, user group, connection type, port, protocol, authentication, source address and much, much more. I have not used any other software firewall that is as configurable.
However unlike Zone Alarm and Comodo the GUI is not aimed at novice users.604!0 -
the tuneup/startup manager/defrag habits drummed into pc users for the past decade do very little to performance and can make things worse especially if they load things at startup. The only routine maintenance needed really is to do a malwarebytes scan occasionally in case avast missed anything, and backup regularly using disk imaging software to multiple media, and avoid falling for the fake AV software floating around, which most AV's have trouble with.

watching tv etc uses little ram.
set pagefile to system managed, it should stop the message.
post a final hijackthis log if you want, and keep for reference if it should become bloated again.
fast file search replacement, (only works on ntfs formatted drives, not fat)

having a peak just above installed ram isn't a big problem, if the system swaps heavily you will notice a slowdown, but if you want you could add another 512.!!

Buy the extra RAM. You'll notice the difference.0

Now I've ticked 'system managed' for page file max peak commit is 326684! SO MAY NOT NEED THE RAM!
THANK YOU CLOSED!
Can't beleive how much smoother/quicker system is.....:j0 -
Guys-thanks to CLOSED & other posts the system is much better....does slow up later in day & needs re-booting. In Staples today-in a bargain bin just got a 1gig stick (KINGSTON) for a tenner! So now have 1.6gig memory! Should I leave all the settings as before (as listed/advised on here)...
CLOSED-worth me posting a new hijack log? Only just put it in so haven't noticed how it'll be in a few hours....tenner though....what a bargain!:j
EDIT....if i post a log can you guys say if it's compatible? Kingston pack says PC2100/2700/3200 compatible & 2266mhz/333mhz/400mhz compatible. Under properites for my computer it shows up fine though.0 -
Bumpy bumpy....anyone?0

Post a log if you want. When it gets slow later in the day, what's the commit charge then? Do you get a lot of hard disk activity? Is this even after having installed memory too?
Personally I would have stuck with Avira - only fractionally greater memory use, but overall lighter on slower systems in my own experience.0 -
New ram sounds fine -see p.29 - http://uk.ts.fujitsu.com/rl/servicesupport/techsupport/Boards/Motherboards/Fujitsu/D1761/A26361-D1761-Z120-UK.pdf0

Hey Russ....hard drive activity is the page file useage when i press 'ctrl/alt/delete' ...is that correct? Computer seems to be much less 'sticky' now....log copied below;-
