Adding RAM....system can take 2GIG but cruicial scanner says just 512MB per slot??!

Hey guys/gals,

I'm not very technical so go easy on me (!). Ok....use my computer for work (booking holidiays so often a few windows open & a booking system that feeds to 4 websites at same time) & keep getting the 'windows is increasing your virtual memory' message. I have TWO slots-128mb in one & 512mb in other. System is a fujitsu siemens Scenic p300, motherboard d1761....184 pin (333mhz). Runs on XP. About 23 GIG hard drive left.

i ran the crucial on line scanner & it says 2GIG is maximum but only 512mb per slot (reccomended by manufacturer)....see below. My question....would it be ok to put a 1 gb stick in the slot that has 128mb in it?? Will it harm system/ Or am i just better only putting in another 512mb?

If your system supports 512mb per slot then 512mb per slot is all you can use. A 1GB stick in a slot won't work.

No point putting 1G in a slot that can only handle 512M, at best it'll only be half-used...

    HOWEVER

The error message refers to VIRTUAL memory, which is to do with disc caching, no money need be spent!

go through the memory adviser tool rather than the scanner, and look for your mobo model, rather than the pc model, just to check

It might be limited in the BIOS. 1GB RAM is ok for XP.

Though it could be the Crucial has it wrong, as you've stated that your Mainboard is different.

If you are sure about your Mainboard then Crucial has it wrong and you can install a 1GB RAM module. The only variation that only accepts 2 x 512MB RAM is the D1451 Mainboard.

    Look here

Perhaps a clean up is in order.

Thanks guys/gals! paddyrg...aware error message is because using swap file-but need more ram as running so many programmes.Stilltheone-the supplier of the base unit (an old employer) used to make up the pc's I think. Are you saying the motherboard is NOT standard on that Fujitsu model? Gunjack-will try that!

If you trim what's running at startup as advised, you probably have enough, what's your commit charge and peak commit charge from task manager, performance

icon_note.gif How much memory your Windows OS will recognize depends on which version of Windows you are running. 32-bit versions of Windows will see (and utilize) only 3GB or 3.5GB. To utilize more memory, install a 64-bit version of your OS. More information about OS memory maximums can be found here.

Not a clue-thats a bit technical for me (!). However i do definately notice how slow it is to get programmes to respond/pages to close. I've trimmed all start-up stuff...use ccleaner at start up & tune-up utilities and solutu. Defrags/cleans every few days. Will try step1/9 of the link though...cheers!
