I will be spending a month in New Zealand in January and I would like to know what is the best way to book cheap car hire - who is best to book it through? We usually use Hertz. Is it cheaper to book in advance - like now?

The cheapest car hire companies in NZ are those that rent cheap wrecks to backpackers. It's a while since I did it so can't recommend any particular one.
Obviously there is a greater risk of it breaking down and less support if you do but they do depend on being reasonably reliable to stay in business.0
