I sold my old phone as I won it and I wasn't really getting on with it that well so I'm looking for a new phone.

I've whittled it down to either a Motorola Defy or a HTC Wildfire.

I know the Motorola Defy is more expensive but I don't mind paying more money if it's worth it.
I've been in a few phone shops in the hope to find one and have a play but to no avail so if any of you own the Motorola Defy, do you think it's worth the money? And if any of you own the Wildfire, do you find it a good phone?
As I said I wanted to have a play before I made a decision but couldn't find any in the shops that were "test" models. They were all the dummy versions so I've resorted to asking on here.:o

I really like the Android operating system so ideally want an Android phone.

The lowest price I can find for the Motorola Defy is £220 but if anyone can find a cheaper price then please link me to it.:o

And if any of you own the Wildfire, do you find it a good phone?

My phones a Wildfire on the 3 network and DS has a Wildfire on the O2 network, it's basically a cut down version of the Desire ie smaller screen and a slower processor.

The main problem I had with it was the 3 version of andriod 2.2.1 'Froyo' that came with it, it seemed to slow the phone down and make it laggy, even when just answering calls and battery life was rubbish. The O2 version for some reason didn't seem to suffer as bad.

After many a google on the problem I 'Rooted*' the phone and installed 'CyanogenMod 7' on the phone which is a stable Custom version of andriod 2.3.3 'Gingerbread'. The phone is now fast all the time and battery life has increased by at least 33% and that's with the same apps installed when I was on android 2.2.1.

Would I buy the Wildfire again, No, I would get the Desire, better phone all around, HTC are still supporting the Desire, whilst with the Wildfire they have no plans to officially update it to 'gingerbread' and you can Network unlock a Desire for free, at the moment you have to pay to unlock a wildfire, which effects resale value.

*Rooting the phone incorrectly can turn your nice new phone into a brick.

The Orange San Fransisco beats the Wildfire in almost all areas, actually it beats most phones 2 or 3 times the price

I have a Defy, and I would definitely recommend it over the Wildfire due to the better screen definition. I'll agree with Vervin that the battery isn't great, but then I do use wi-fi and GPS on most of the time.

I would be tempted by the Defy, unless you went for a HTC desire, instead of a Wildfire.

I went for a Nokia n8 which is fab, 12mp camera HD video, long battery life, good hardware, and good sound. The only thing that lets it down slightly is the internet, although its what I've been using for the last month or so to access this forum. :D

The Defy uses flash for the internet, so you should get a similar experience to a pc for most sites, plus it has a large screen. It depends if you want it to fit in your pocket or not. My n8 does.

The Defy beats the Wildfire hands down in almost every area but they aren't really a fair comparison, and in my opinion there are much better phones out there. As another poster mentioned, the Orange San Francisco is significantly better than the Wildfire and only marginally beaten by the defy... the best part is that the OSF sells for around £100.00.

    Thanks everyone for the replies.

I want to keep my O2 number so not really sure if I could with the Orange San Francisco.

I like the large screen of the Defy but also like the portability of the Wildfire. My only worry is how comfortable it would be to use the Wildfire as I have a Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini x10 Pro and the screen is tiny so makes things very uncomfortable.

I presume they mean the Orange San Francisco.

To the OP. You have two options with regards to keeping your O2 number. You can move to orange and have them port your number across (free to do) or you can simply unlock the Orange San Francisco and use your O2 sim card (again this can be done for free).
