So - Year 2 starts - I am now at a little below £94K but without the mahusive salary and the equally mahusive ability to knock off huge chunks of mortgage (as seen from where I started with my lightbulb moment just after taking voluntary redundancy to where I am now, working as a freelance journo).

It is a huge adjustment to make - and I mentioned to the lovely Sepa recently how miffed I was at a former co-worker's rebuke of "get a grip" when I was really floored by the realities of freelancing and that income can change on a dime.

All my working life I have been salaried, and she also kindly pointed out that even if I was contracting, I would have the benefit of months of income to plan to, not interchangeable amounts.

And then this month I learned a valuable lesson - I use an online accountancy and even though I created an invoice for August, for some reason it didn't push out an email (and it also seems to have eaten some of my expenses I entered in the other day).
So I was REALLY panicking as I had to re-issue the invoice on the day I should have been paid (with a hangover to boot...).

Luckily - a huge tax rebate cheque arrived this morning, so that has gone straight into the bank today and that is enough to tide me nicely over.
But my client called me this afternoon and said that he can pay up for August in the next week or so (and nudged me to get my backside in gear for September's invoice)...

So... I should be able to pay myself some additional expenses - and therefore need to think about how I start feeding Vernon again.

I think a good goal is... try and pay half of my mortgage amount (£210) as an overpayment. If I can actually manage that once a month, I would be extremely giddy.
But will strive to do it every other month (i.e. saving £105).

I don't want to just take money out of the business while things are getting back on an even keel after all the disappointment of the way the course ended for me.

You sound cheerier Hurdler, well done :T.

If you struggle to get decent work here maybe you should consider Australia - cracking headline :rotfl:

Alas - no joy with internship... but the tool reviews I have been doing seem to be OK and maybe more people will want to do them for the next, which may swell the coffers a little bit. I just have to bite the bullet and for the past couple of months just catch up with stuff I owed while I was distracted with exams/portfolio.

Been fun reminding myself of what I used to do technically ... but it's been exhausting trying to fit in shorthand around it (especially as I had to go back to 70 and work up).

At the moment I am working until about 6pm, but trying to do vocab and theory 15 mins in every hour) then having my tea and then working on shorthand passages until 9pm.

With non stop sport on the TV - I just have it on mute so I can look up once in a while to avert my eyes from squiggles.

I know I seem to be perpetually apologising ... but perhaps with this news you will indulge me a bit of time to sort out my Excel house...
