There is an unsecured network in range of the laptop and it will connect to that for only a few seconds as well. (If that makes any difference!)

What channel is your network on and what channel is the other network on? Try changing to a channel number well away from the other network.
 Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:
  • when it connects to yours, can you surf?

If so, try downloading netstumbler to find out what channels are in use in the area, and change the channel on the router to one as far away from the others as you can.

    Sorry you've lost me!

Can surf fine from desktop. Laptop doesn't stay connected long enough to do anything at all.

How do I change the channel on the router :o

Yes using WPA-PSK TKIP encryption. Followed your encryption details in post 37 - didn't make up key.

downloaded netstumbler but don't know how to use it!!

    Really sorry!

Couldn't it be something simple like faulty router?

  • try putting an 8 character word of your choosing for the key in the router config, then use that on the laptop, see if it connects.

Lot's of people have these problems, so I'd discount it being a faulty router for now.

to use netstumbler, just click on channels, see what is in use in the area.
