    Graham_Devon,

I started my first mini-equity ISA recently, and bought funds (4 x £1,000) through Selftrade*.

Before I started, I read these boards thoroughly (going back several months), along with various fund supermarket websites such as Selftrade, etc. The main theme running through all the stuff I read however (and especially from dunstonh on here) was to spread the risk.

One of the most useful sources of information (once you've decided on your sectors etc) is https://www.citywire.co.uk/funds where you can compare fund performance over 3M, 1Y, 3Y, 5Y, & 10Y. My approach, and remember I'm a complete novice here, was to pick a fund that has consistently appeared in the top 10 in its sector in all the time periods listed above.

    Good luck.

    * Getting 'referred' for the Selftrade account means they'll pay you £50 - so your first year's ISA management fee of £25 is covered, along with a couple of your £12.50 'buy' costs. There's a thread on the referral's board about this scheme.

I do have a practice portfolio on thisismoney where I can buy shares with pretend money and see how I would have done etc, which is a useful tool for learning.

Could I ask what you feel you've learnt from this? It seems odd that you aren't moving on to buy shares from this, rather than asking about funds.

Or perhaps you have not done too well with the shares?
    Trying to keep it simple...;)
