  • there is usually a flap on the bottom, if it is vacant, just slip a 1GB chip in. There is a guide on crucial.com.

Do you need 2GB? How much do you have now?

dont need 2gb will probably go for 1gb and if needed upgrade later. have 512mb just now. the d600 has 2 slots which has 256mb in each would it be ok to take both out an just put 1 1gb in and leave the other vacant for another 1gb upgrade at a later date.
  • why not leave on 256 in, and put a 1GB in the other. For XP, 1.25 GB is plenty for general use.

'run off' ? Did they give any indication what they meant ? As it will simply work using both modules.

think they meant that effectively the computer will have 256 memory as it will be confused buy the 2 different modules and just work on the 256. i take it this is wrong

Yes, completely wrong. As long as you get the correct stuff for your laptop, and Crucial are very good, it will work with both. Should be easy to fit, matter of removing a small panel on the underside.

I think hat this is alluding to the speed, DDR is usually backwards compatible so you can fit PC3200 alongside PC2700 and it will run at the lower speed.
