As I have been so over the moon with my computer since it has been sorted out I have been given my sisters computer because it is also very slow and unresponsive. I hope nobody minds me coming back so soon for more help but you are all soooo clever
She also has a problem that if the computer get switched off it wipes everything like photos, passwords and anything she has saved on the computer.
I have done a hijackthis scan and found the commit charge stuff.

If she's using Window XP or Vista; have a look in c:\documents and settings, or if windows 7 it'll be c:\users and see how many folders are in there (and what are they called)
It sounds as though it's either not creating a profile folder or it's recreating a new one every time she logs on.. so there could be a folder called 'user'00001 and user00002 and user00003 etc.0 -
It is only running XP sp2 , there too many broadband / network things on there , plus rapport quick time, toolbars , Citrix gotoassist, and AVG. That commit charge is massive, is it that high straight after a reboot?
Who is the isp, and how is it connecting to the net - (various isp related things running)
Unless you need them running all the time, use the startup tab in msconfig to disable these items from running at startup (they can always be run manually if needed)

If you are posting because the machine is slow and haven't done so already, post your physical ram total, commit charge total, commit charge peak by doing CTRL ALT DEL, Task manager, performance - after virus infections this is the principle reason a machine goes slow so this information is important to help you
This is a general guide on cleaning up infections and speeding up pc's https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2436849
If you haven't all ready done it, Install Malwarebytes and do a FULL (not quick) scan (after updating it), fix anything found before closing, otherwise you'll have to do it all over again. If anything was found reboot the machine before continuing. http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/
If you know you have just been infected, with a fake antivirus for example, running system restore to a previous restore point is often the fastest way of getting your machine working again
Making any changes to a PC setup always comes with a slight risk of something going wrong, the worse case scenario is an unbootable PC - ideally you should have got a backup of important data on dvd or external disk, and a disk image backup (http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.asp) or windows disc/factory restore partition available before you start. In the unlikely event that anything does go wrong, post on another pc for advice.

If you suspect an infection, here are some other virus scanners to try, let them fix anything found

Scanning with all the scanners above along with your resident scanner should remove most or all infections if there are any present on your machine, below is some specific (optional) advice based on your log which may help to improve speed and tidy things up.

Install and run ccleaner (untick the google toolbar during the install). Untick the "windows log files" box, under the system heading before cleaning. Also Tick the java cache tick box under CCleaner, applications, internet to wipe the java cache which sometimes hides infections. http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download/slim
Install and run startuplite, accept suggested changes - http://www.malwarebytes.org/StartUpLite.exe
Disable ctfmon - control panel, regional and language options, languages, details, advanced, tick the Turn off advanced text services, ok

If you want a speedy machine, Use windows firewall and replace your antivirus and security software with avast 6 free - (a fast and lightweight virus scanner with good detection rates) http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download :
This is a list of (or remnants of) security software evident in your log, you may wish to uninstall these in Control Panel (add/remove programs or programs/features) to keep your PC running smoothly, too much overlapping or bloated security or useless tuning software can have a drastic effect on performance - always leave one resident scanner running (eg avast/avira etc)

Run Windows update, your XP service pack is SP2 which out of date
Download and install cleanmem http://www.pcwintech.com/cleanmem (download direct download). In windows explorer, go to c:\windows\tasks, click on the clean system memory task, schedule, advanced, and change it from every 30 minutes to every 5 minutes, then ok, ok. Find c:\program files\cleanmem\mini_monitor, run it and right click the icon (near the clock) to set it to automatically run at startup, show percentage to keep an eye on your ram use. If your machine is still slow after doing everything listed, post your commit charge and installed physical ram details from task manager performance

When you've done all that, post a fresh hijackthis log and any logs of infections!!

Brilliant, thanks. I will get on with this this evening and post back results

Thanks for the relpies, yes I have run a malwarebites scan and nothing got picked up. I will have a look at the folders and see if I understand anything.....

ok, in documents and settings there are folders saying All users, Enduser, Temp and then 17 folders all with a number variation of TEMP.ENDUSER-F0464D5.000
if she looks in some of those folders she'll find her missing information..
create a new user account for her and log in as it. Then save something (anything) to the desktop, reboot and log back in and see if it's still there.
Sounds as though her profile is screwed so it keeps creating new ones when she logs on.0 -

For the actual problem itself, it might be an idea to try to follow what's in post 7 first

If the profile is corrupt as it appears to be, a lot of changes will be lost on reboot anyway.
Just to expand on what scheming gypsy wrote:
1. Create a new user account like in this guide:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/279783 (It doesn't matter what you call it)
2. Log into that user account (start menu > log off, then find the new account you created.)
3. From that new user account, create a file on the desktop. For example, just right click on the desktop, select NEW, then do a text document. Rename it something memorable.
4. Restart the machine, and log back into the new account. Report back whether the file remained on the desktop.
Basically it's just to determine if creating a new profile will solve the problem, by testing 'object permanence' if you will.
Normally Windows stores your profile in a certain folder, but when that profile gets corrupted somehow then Windows goes and makes a 'temp' profile folder like the ones you saw. Each of those temp folder represents each time she rebooted the computer, i.e. a new one gets created each time the computer reboots.
That's why the files appear missing. Each temp folder contains whatever she downloaded, saved, created, etc on each session until it rebooted. She will have to grab her photos & documents etc from each of the temporary profiles.0 -
oops sorry I forgot to say that I have done that bit. I saved a notepad document to the desktop and it stayed there when I restarted the computer so hopefully as long as she uses the new account she will be ok?
What does the hijack this log look like...... to someone who sees more than a jumble of numbers and letters??:o0 -
Oh okay good. In that case, she'll be able to use the new profile. She or you will have to go into each of those 17 temporary profile folders and look for all the things she's saved, e.g. photos, documents, etc, and copy them to wherever she wants them. It might be long, tedious work - so I'll let you do that

Is Lottie the new profile name? HJT is okay.
Still got the AVG linkscanner, so can tick and fix that:
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {CCC7A320-B3CA-4199-B1A6-9F516DD69829} - (no file)
Unless she uses Apple TV, or broadcasts her iTunes over the network, you can disable this by UNTICKING it in Start > Run> Msconfig > Services:
O23 - Service: Bonjour Service - Apple Inc. - C:\Program Files\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exe
Similarly this can be disabled in the same way:
O23 - Service: Ati HotKey Poller - ATI Technologies Inc. - C:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2evxx.exe
You can see which of the other startups can be disabled, but I don't see them making a huge speed difference.
