I don't know about HSBC, but from my experience of post rooms, when I worked in one about 15 years ago the "internal mail" was just put in one large envelope and sent out via royal mail.

It certainly worked that way when I was employed by the Halifax, albeit 30 years ago.

They have to be printed, manufactured etc, then posted out - it can't happen the same day the account is opened, that is impossible!

Metro bank in London gives you your card and cheque book there and then ;)
  • The EXACT same situation happened to me - it took almost 4 weeks from online application to my debit card arriving when I opened my HSBC Advance account.

I also thought it would make more sense (and save time) to go into my local branch to drop off my signature forms, and they managed to lose them in the "internal mail". I had to go back into the branch with two forms of ID (even though originally they identified me electronically and didn't need any physical proof), they then printed off further signature forms and asked ME to mail them to the account opening department(!). I did this and then got the "you didn't ask for a debit card so we didn't issue one" line...so frustrating! I eventually got my card and cheque book through, and then it took a further 2 weeks for them to activate my online banking and send me one of them security key thingy's. I can't believe how difficult it was for the sake of a current account. From pressing "submit" on my original application to being able to log in to online banking it had taken 6 weeks!

Now my account is opened, everything is running smoothly and they have been brilliant with all my enquiries. I recently applied for a credit card with them...hopefully it will arrive before christmas...;)

Thanks for your post, same scenario as me! Can you remember a tick box requesting a Debit Card? I can't at all, I've received a Welcome pack all about the Advance account, do you have to request an overdraft? Good luck with the credit card:T

I don't remember that tick box, I think they are making it up - besides, who on earth applies for a current account like a HSBC Advance and doesn't want a debit card??

You have to request an overdraft, they don't give it to you automatically. In all fairness to them though, I applied for the credit card 2 days ago and they approved it today and said it will be here in 5 working days...but I need to see that to believe it ;)

On June 30th I got accepted for an HSBC advance account, I got sent a signature request letter and the account would be opened.
So instead of putting it in the post, it said I could also drop it into my local branch - which I did. Still no sign of a debit card or anything, decided to ring and this took a bit of explaining!
Finally was told no paperwork has been received:mad: So has the branch forgotten to send it off or have they sent it to the right department?
Think it was a Coventry address, not impressed to be honest.
Sending stuff by 'internal mail' wouldn't that only take a day?

It sounds like you are being messed about. If they do not sort out your case lively then you should write a formal complaint, they are obliged to reply and act very swiftly.

I personally think that the Advance account should have mobile phone insurance for that price. I know that I am getting side tracked but if ever I was to pay for an account again then mobile phone insurance would be a must. All the best.
