In-laws bought a house before the boom for £30k and after 5 years later sold to me at begining of 2006 for £5k under value; £92k!
But it is the only way me and OH could get on the property ladder. We now let the house out and it's nice to have somoene else paying the mortgage which makes us feel better about not buying sooner.
So, i was 32 when i got my first mortgage and still have some way to go to paying it off.0 -
I was 29 and partner 35 when got a £110K mortgage in 2003 for a 2 bedroom flat (90%, 25 years). Overpaid every year and change mortgage when our 2 year deal was up. We are now down to ~£74K at just under 14 years.

If all goes to plan, we'll be moving at the end of January, and have a 185k mortgage - have taken it out over 22 yrs, but will be overpaying. Hope to get it down to about 15 yrs.Comping Challenge

nice one , i like the idea of this thread - hopefully we will see a fuller picture when we cross reference who posts on here and the other thread re - age when you hope to pay off your mortgage by !
!!
Quick answer:
Mortgage at 26 and 27
Mortgage-free by 46 and 47.
To extend the answer: We bought our house in 1976 when we were both earning.
Then in 1979 I gave up work due to pregnancy. Husband gave it up to go to Uni/train to be a teacher.
1979-1983 We had a lodger to help us pay bills as husband was a student and I was a SAHM, but we couldn't afford to overpay on the mortgage.
1983 onwards: Husband teacher, me SAHM - later I was a Lollipop lady for many years. Interest rate kept going up (IIRC) , we paid what we had to. Eventually it hit 15%
When the interest rate eventually came down, we carried on paying the same amount and hence paid for our house in 20 years rather than 25 (mortgage-free in 1996). We still have this house.
I went back to work full-time in 1996. We got a BTL mortgage on another property in 1998 which we sold in 2005. So we are now entirely mortgage-free (we paid cash for our Spanish house).
I agree, an interesting thread!(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton0 -
10th November 1968 Husband moved in our 1st House and 1st babe arrived that day so thats easy to remember both!!! I was 20 and Mr Old was 23...We paid £4,500 for our House and stayed there until 2000 but also bought a Spanish apartment along the way as an investment which we sold 2004 and retired early. Was truly worth it now..... Me and Mr Fritha bought our first house (a shared ownership one) in March this year I was 25 and he was 29, no clue when we'll be mortgage free, we're overpaying as much as we can but it's not much!
I'd be interested to know how to calculate how much interest we've saved tho if someone could tell me please, thanks :-)Comping, freebieing and trying to pay the mortgage off early!0
