  • We have recently bought (September 2006) a 2 bedroom flat for £182,500, our mortgage is for £136,000. I was 20 years old (a wk off 21) and OH was 25years old. I was a little worried at first about how we would manage but it's the best thing we have ever done :D

I took out my first mortgage of £35k aged 24 (1 bed flat for £40k) in 1989. My next mortgage aged 30 was 1995 for £60k (2 bed flat for £80k). The third house in 1999 I was aged 34 and mortgage was £157k (4 bed semi for 175k). Sold that in August 2006 and took out mortgage of £467k on 4 bed detached (£725k)... now aged 41.

I took my first mortgage out nearly 4 years ago when I was 25. Borrowed 85k, stopped in house for 3 years before selling and buying another. Now currently have mortgage for £124k.

It's shocking to read how little some of you paid for your houses a few years ago! (& not fair!)
  • I'm quite surprised having read through this thread ... I thought I would have been shot down at first sight by any lending institution if I approached them for a mortgage ...

Quite good to know that isn't the case just because of my age!

I'm tempted to visit a mortgage broker/IFA and see what is hypothetically possible!

    Thanks and Congrats everyone!!
  • We were 18 and 19 years. Halifax initialy said we could have a mortgage then pulled out just before the signing (more fool them). We found a mortgage elswhere £23,500 roughly and it should be paid off by the time DH reaches 35.

Our mortgage was approved on my 23rd birthday - £41,000 for a 3 bed mid terrace! That was nearly 7 years ago. If only we had bought the whole street!

Got my first mortgage last year at age 24 - 119000! Long way to go until I've paid that off, feel lucky that I've managed to get a place as many of my friends still can't afford it!

We were 25 & 21 when we took our mortgage out in 2002.

88,000 borrowed, now down to under 60K.

Alas later this year we will be buying elsewhere, so that 'small' amount will be going upwards.

  • Just bought our 1st place in Oct 2006. Aged 24 and 23, fiancee has since turned 24 and im 25 in Feb.

£82000 for a 2 bedroom ground floor flat, had to borrow 100% but love the fact this property rose in value from £59000 to £82000 in 2 years. Wished we'd bought it 2 years ago.

I bought my first house last year with a mortgage of 116,500, and a small deposit. I was 19, DP was 22. We had to virually beg HSBC but we got it, and our mortgage payments are lower than the rent that we were paying.
