You'll want to start off with a Basic Current account (if you can't get a 'full free one'), and then take the time to build up an 'internal' score with the bank you go with. After 6 clean months of not going O/D, ask to upgrade to a better current account.
But whoever you go with, make sure they register your account details and performance with the various Credit Reference Agencies. THIS is the reason you're doing all this (for when you go for a mortgage down the line). If you open an account and it ISN'T registered with the credit agencies, then you will have wasted your time.
I'm not sure what banks always register their basic accounts with the CRA's, but I'm sure others here will know better than me. Best of luck.
