After about fifteen months of use since I purchased my computer, my Norton Antivirus is now stating that it needs renewing.
Is there a way around this, or do I have to pay?

Hi Looby, as mentioned by tkblueyonder, there are free alternatives out there.
Go here and download the free version of AVG.
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5#avg-anti-virus-free
Then uninstall Norton and install AVG. Hope this helps.0 -
Are the free alternatives as good, and do they automatically keep themselves up to date?0

Yes, they are fine and automatically update. Martin recommends it too in one of his articles. There is a thread about it too somewhere. I use AVG.“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0

If you're going to pay, then at least go for Nod32 or Kaspersky. They're generally the best around.
AVG is a very good free alternative."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -
If you want to keep a McAfee or Norton without having to pay the rrp i.e. £40, you can get the most up-to-date packages on ebay for £10 (legit version too), bargain if you ask me as when used in conjunction with some of the free ones.
Bottom line, no 1 program will find EVERYTHING. You should really run 2-3 of each antivirus, spyware program to feel as though you've truely caught everything0 -

Multiple AV's is a big no no. It'll eat up resources, and can cause clashes or false positives. For anti-spyware more than one is ok (I'd recommend CounterSpy if you just want one), but for AV's you're best off picking one and sticking to it.
I'm currently using AVG (my Kaspersky license ran out), but I have to say Nod32 was my favourite, followed by Kaspersky. AVG suits me fine though as I don't use Windows as my primary OS anymore."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -
Loobeylou ... uninstall the virus scanner, then reinstall it, it *should* (not tried it with Nortons) give you another year free... repeat process next year.0
