Moving to Australia but want to keep number for when i return

Last week i got offered a job in australia for 4 years ive accepted the offer and now im in the process of sorting everything out that goes with it.

I recently started a new 24 month contract with Vodafone in April and pay £35/month. If i had known i was going to australia then i wouldnt have started a new contract.
Plus they havnt invented time travel yet so i couldnt see this coming.
I was hoping some one could help.

Im wanting to change to PAYG from my contract as i wish to save the number for when i return as everyone has that number for me including business numbers (im a contractor).

I contacted Vodafone and they said it would cost me £600:rotfl: to buy out my contract. They also said i could sell the phone to put towards this cost (they offered me £60:rotfl:)

I dont want to give the contract to someone else as they will be recieving my calls.

The only option i can think of is to keep paying the £35/month and not use the minutes/texts/data

Can any suggest anyother ideas

Cheers
Mark

Presumably the Australian company is sponsoring your application for a visa and will be helping you through the application, character checks etc?

They will also be paying (towards) relocation expenses? One such expense is sorting out any outstanding contracts. So you may be worrying unnecessarily.

Other than that, you'll have to keep paying the contract as you've ruled out the other options.
  • The ETF is the remainder of your contract -VAT, -2%. So you will be saving about 22% by paying it, so you would probably be better to pay on your credit card then pay it off monthly if you cant afford to pay outright.

You could ask Vodafone how soon you can change down to a cheaper contract. I'm with O2 and they let you change down a tariff after a certain number of months (I forget how many). Might save a bit on the monthly bills at least.

Vodafone have stopped doing this with any contract taken out in (about) the past 2-years.
