Alcohol and Christmas

  • i dont understand people who put themselves and thier beer first. dh's dad is due here tomorrow and on walking through the door he will ask for a beer.

    I dont like drinking infront of my kids, i have never seen my folks even tipsy and my dad is 64 next year. i grew up being allowed a glass of wine but never saw the need to get plastered or drink on the quiet for the sake of it until uni years. boxing day was always a family day. the holiday is so short we used spend it together in our jim jams for as long as poss until being dragged out for a lovely brisk walk around the farm.

    dh grew up with his dad drunk every night and hated it. chrsitmas dinner was late every year as dad was still in the pub. im moving all the wine and beer tomorrow and refusing alcohol even with our evening meal.

    sorry door would remain locked here and phone off the hook, if he cant take a key, then he can come home when he is sober !

    Alcohol is fine in moderation and can help relax, especially at Christmas when it can get fraught. After all families together for that length of time can be stressful.

    Too much, in my opinion, can cause the rows, when it wears off and people get more 'honest'.

    My husband slated my mother for not bringing out more booze. She knows he can get nasty if he has too much, so limited it. Our son is the same. We had to travel the next day and didn't want them having a bad hangover.
    An average day in my life:hello: :eek::mad: :coffee::coffee::coffee::T :o :rotfl: :rotfl: :p :eek::mad: :beer:

    Sorry to hear all that Lil_me - hope you got him sorted out.

    I agree with you - Boxing day is a family day...we don't even leave the house, just let the kids open everything and the place ends up a tip lol.

    If I were in your situation, when he eventually phoned to arrange a pick-up time I would have refused to go out, and told him to go and stay with his drinking buddies.

    The quickest way for a parent to get a child's attention is to sit down and look comfortable. :eek:

    Not sure if you can draw any consolation or light at the end of the tunnel from this, but I split from my heavy drinking DH because of his refusal to give it up, and he was dead within 20 months from the effects of alcoholism (although to his dying day he declared he'd not touched a drop in ages)! Believe you me, if his drinking is affecting the life of you and your children, you can definitely make it on your own and better.
    Not an exactly positive post, but it just shows you how destructive this drug can be. Good luck!
