Not much of a place on minimum wage times 38 hours but it'll be something. It'll be much better for him to stay with parents for free.

I suppose the original question "Is there any way I can legally make him do either?" has never really been answered. The answer is no.

i live in a place on my own and i get less than what the ops sone gets so thats a load of tosh he shouldnt be living there for free he should be paying his way hes a grown man now

  • What a selfish young man. How could he do that to his mum :( What are his wages spent on then, booze, fags, etc? I'd be making a list of monthly rent and bills and showing him how much it would cost to move out, then give him the choice. Pay up or get out!! No food, laundry or ANYTHING until he pays up. Disgusting that he has to be persuaded though.

    Selfish little git!!

When I lived at home, I think i was earning about $700 a month. I paid mum £400 a month in rent.

I don't for a second believe that he gets £900 a month and 'can't afford' to pay you rent. He thinks he can just get away with it. Don't let him!! Kick him out ASAP!!!!

    (possible negative thought...)

If the little ungrateful swine does leave for any reason, will OP's benefits be impacted?? (eg does, say, HB/LHA amount depend on how many people are living in the place??) One fewer adult ??

Unlikely. She is completely unable to claim any benefits for him and currently loses a lot because she has a working adult in the house. Since he refuses to recompense her for this loss of benefits, she is worse off than if he leaves.

When he leaves she needs to make a new claim for Council Tax Benefit and Housing Benefits which will increase.

The only possible fly in the ointment is if she is in private rented accomodation and has more than 3 bedrooms. It may be that the two younger children are expected to share and she is only entitled to a 3 bedroomed house. If one is older, she can have a 4 bedroomed house anyway.

When I started work at 16 I was earning around £433 per month and paid my parent £120 in keep, now I earn considerably more but they have only increased it to around £300 per month.

I have tried to get them to have more but they won't accept so instead I have given them money towards things (like their Car, TV etc.).

I'm about to move out soon, I think i'm in for a shock.

I wouldn't dream of not giving my parents anything at all and if they needed something I would buy it for them or help them out with buying it.

Sounds like your son needs a kick up the backside but as mentioned above you need to mean it and be prepared to go through with it, if not then he will realise that he can do what he likes for ever.
I have a lot of problems with my neighbours, they hammer and bang on the walls sometimes until 2 or 3 in the morning - some nights I can hardly hear myself drilling ;)
  • When I started my first job I gave my parents 50% of my net income (my first wage was £3,250 a year!) Then I bought my own house and realised how much it REALLY cost to live!!! This boy needs a lesson in what it costs to pay bills. I would literally spend half an hour going through my bank statement and working out the percentage of everything - rent/mortgage, council tax, gas, elec, water, any TV package he enjoys the benefit of and food. Show him, as a %, what it costs for HIM to live in your house. Then come to an arrangement. e.g. if the amount he costs you equals the monthly food bill, let him do the food shopping.

I have a horrible feeling that the son involved is behaving this way because he's been enabled/indulged thus far.... OP, this has to STOP!! You are doing him no favours. When he does go out into the big wide world he will be shocked at how much life costs... My niece is just about to turn 17 and has worked since her 16th birthday. She has paid "board" since day 1 - just a small percentage of her wages but enough for her to realise that nothing in life is free and to prepare her for what is to come. It's part of growing up and an important lesson. Good luck!!!
