I am looking for an inexpensive home cinema/theater system with optical audio input but without DVD player.
I have done Google search but all i can see are DVD home cinema/theater, just need to wires up my sky, ps3 and dvd to get proper surround sound whilst watching telly, dvd or playing games.
Below is what i have at the moment:
i)HDTV with digital audio output.
ii)PS3 with optical audio output
iii)Sky HD box with optical audio output
iv)Samsung HDD DVD player with optical audio output.

Though the vision may not be the true future of man but it can't be completely beyond his control.

Richer Sounds are your best bet..

Basic AV amp, with all the connections you need, and which will do the HDMI switching for you between the PS3 and Sky, and might even upscale the DVD player. Add some speakers (re-use from around your house, any old cack will do for the rears for starters, decent ones for the front L and R, leave the centre speaker out for the moment if you need to, and <£100 will get you a sub at some point.0

bluedove, I agree with almillar and spike 7451, the best solution is the av amp/receiver route.
I very much doubt that you will find an 'inexpensive' all-in-one home cinema kit with the inputs you need. Some only have one input.0 -
Yes , for the price they are both good value for money and will give much better sound to the 'run of the mill' all-in-one home cinema kits.
They will also give you much more versatility with connections and better reliability.0 -
I know that most people are stuck with HDMI 1.3 kit,
but you should always have the upgrade path in mind.
The HDMI 1.4 idea is that the amp doesn't need to switch inputs,
it just plays whatever the TV sends it on the back channel via the HDMI 1.4 cable. Don't forget the TV also has: Freeview/FreeSat tuner, SCART, PC & jack, component & phono, S-video, as well as the HDMI inputs. So it's more convenient to change source using the TV remote.
Assuming you have a HDMI 1.3 TV, you can still achieve this by sending the audio from the TV to the amp via optical or SCART, but it is less integrated, and you find you need to reach for the amp remote more often.
if you were going for a projector, which doesn't have an audio track to send, it is essential to have an AV amp with lots of HDMI inputs.0
