Hi,
Hoping someone out there might be able to help as can't find a site where I can search by weight.
Basically I need a laptop that weighs 1.1kg or less. Could probably stretch to 1.2kg but preferably lighter.
I currently have a Toshiba Portege R600 13Z (12" screen I think) which is absolutely fab, but as I am leaving my job and it belongs to my employer, I either have to buy it off them ( £1200 and its over a year old) or buy a new one. Toshiba seem to have changed their range and they seem to have got heavier? Is there anything else out there, or should I just buy my current one from my employer.
Any advice would be gratefully received!
Thank you!!

Most laptops of that size tend to weigh in at around the 1.4kg mark these days. Mostly down to the fact that people expect laptops year on year to have better processors, better gpu, more RAM, more storage space and they still expect to have the same or better battery performance. The reality is that with ever advancing technology the manufacturers can provide all of these things quite cheaply, but battery technology hasn't been able to keep up! That means we end up with laptops with with powerful hardware that is battery hungry. The only way to compensate is to increase the number of cells in the battery and that ultimately means more weight.
If you can stretch to 1.4kg then you open up so many doors in terms of Lenovo Thinkpads/Ideapads, HP, Toshiba. Anything below 1.2kg and you might be worth considering a tablet.0 -

They want to charge 1200 for a 1 year old laptop?
Quick look on google shopping showed them for about 500 pounds refurbished with a years warranty.[greenhighlight]but it matters when the most senior politician in the land is happy to use language and examples that are simply not true.

Thanks so much to everyone who has replied. You have provided me with a few options and I am really grateful! Both the Asus and the Samsung look really good and I will look at them in detail. What seems certain, is that buying my current Toshiba is not a good option.
Thanks again for your help and advice I really am grateful!!0 -
If it's any of my business, why do you need such a light device?0

Hi, Why do a need such a light laptop? Good question and should have explained... For the last six years I have worked from home primarily in the evening (whilst the children are in bed) and so have worked sat with laptop, on my lap every evening. However, I started getting continual pain in my legs from having the laptop resting on them. This was diagnosed as sciatica and after putting up with it for many months, we bought my first Toshiba Portege, then weighing just under 1kg. The result was magic, pain gone and never returned to this day. Hence when the original Portege broke - dog pulled screen off as whilst light it is not robust - I replaced it with an updated version of the same. So current one weighs 1.1kg and whilst I could go a little heavier, the weight is critical and the lighter I can keep it the better.
Hope this makes sense and thanks for the question!0 -
Why not just use a padded 'beanbag' tray or other support under the laptop? Or use the laptop on a desk?
Despite the name, laptops are not really intended for use on the lap anyway.
A machine of such light weight is going to have a cramped keyboard and tiny screen anyway, which in turn cause their own problems. No free lunch, and no free laptop0
