good Eve All.

looking at getting a new phone as my sim only jobbie is about fubar'd.

saw the samsung galaxy sII in carphone warehouse, for 31 quid on vodafone, however the insurance they advised is £12 a month......... this seems extrememly steep at 1/3 of the cost of the contract nearly.....

does any one have any advise to get this cheaper, is it somthing you can barter on, or is it best to get it online?

Start with Martin's guide: Mobile Phone Insurance and the corresponding discussion thread.
And bear in mind that cheaper insurance can in fact not insure you almost from anything.

Having said that, personally I never insure my mobiles.
  • Most home and contents insurance cover your phones. Also, you get free phone insurance with most premium bank accounts (costing about £12 a month) so you could get all the other benefits from these for the same cost.

My personal take on it is that it's not worth it, even at half the price.

If ever you want to make a claim, even if it is one day successful, the amount of time waiting on hold, the amount of hassle filling out paperwork, the miscommunications, the demanding requirements on yourself to actually report the claim... It's just not cricket.

Best bet is to go without insurance, just take good care of your phone. Get an otterbox and protect it. If something unavoidable happens, you can downgrade the model by buying something pay as you go, a decent android can be had for £100. There are some very good payg handsets available for good prices. Or you could replace your phone for a fraction of the cost of the insurance by buying used from ebay or amazon. Repairs can be done for a fraction of the cost of the insurance too.

Think about it... they want £288 for the insurance, plus a massive excess if you claim. Redonkulous.

And on a joint bank account, for the single cost it covers you and partners phones. Don't know if the cover is as good tho. Hopefully I won't find out.

This was on another thread the other day, it looks like a really good deal to me. I'm considering getting it in a few weeks (if the deal is still there).

    Talkmobile Smart plan 400
    (12 months)
    400 mins Any
    Network Anytime + 1000 Texts
    1GB Data
    £30.00 n/a £99.99

It's a total cost contract of £459.99, which is cheaper than buying the phone itself but includes plenty of usage. Best of all, it's only a 12 month contract so you can have a new phone in a year.

    It's on mobiles.co.uk
