Ordering metacam online?

Hi

I have a dog who has arthritis and hip dysplasia. He has been on metacam for the last 3 years since diagnosis. We did have him covered by pet insurance and was able to claim the costs of the metacam on this.

However since our renewal premiums increased to an extent we could no longer afford it, we had to cancel his insurance :(

I am now looking in to buying metacam online (our vets charge £62 a bottle, cheapest I have found online is £19!) I have obtained a repeat prescription for 2 large bottles from our vet but I am unsure who to order from as the vets parting words to me were 'be careful ordering online as you may not got the genuine medicine'

Has anyone bought metacam online or could recommend a reputable supplier?

Thanks :)

VetUK have an excellent reputation, any vet supplies company registered in the UK should be sourcing legitimate products.

  • Oh, shame on your vet - I'm sorry but this is scaremongering. Yes, of course you have to be careful but ...

I buy 180ml Metacam for my dog. I've tried a few online suppliers and (touch wood) haven't had any problems - I always use a UK company etc.

    I currently get it from Viovet http://www.viovet.co.uk/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=180ml+metacam&x=0&y=0 - it's £17.60 just now.

Their customer service is excellent and it's really easy. You can scan a copy of the prescription and upload it onto their system (or fax, post etc).

I uploaded a new prescription & ordered 2 bottles on 27th June (Mon evening) and they arrived on the Wednesday!

Thanks to both of you for the replies :) and to rfta for the link.

I do get the 180ml bottle too and that is such a good price!
  • Yup, it's excellent - my dog is also elderly and I couldn't afford to insure him when I got him due to him being of "indeterminate" age and with no medical history (quoted £50/month with a £70 excess 6 years ago - yes I've been lucky with the odd tummy upset etc and certainly wouldn't recommend not having insurance but the cost has to be affordable).

His 6 month check-up, prescription and the metacam comes to less than £90 (£15/month).

If you can afford to get the 2 bottles together, you'll also get their free delivery.:D

This site http://www.petdispensary.co.uk/ is run by a large vet practice I used to work for. I can't vouch for their prices (haven't looked), and have never ordered from them, so no idea about customer service, but their products will be 100% genuine UK veterinary licensed
I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

  • How did you approach your vet re: requesting prescription?

My kitty is on Metacam & as you say it can become quite costly when buying from the vet. I would like to ask the vet for a prescription, but have never quite known how to bring the subject up.

I just ask them to write me a prescription rather than dispensing the medication.

You might get raised eyebrows but if you explain the price difference...

I've used vetuk and viovet and animed for worming products, and chemist direct for prescription products. All were very good.

I just explained that as I was no longer able to cover our dog with Pet insurance, I had been looking around for my cheapest option to buying metacam and could they match online prices.

They couldn't match, so I just asked for a prescription. It wasn't a problem.
