Bonnie - Is the Rosemary Conley diet working? Are you losing weight? If you are happy with the weight loss etc and the clubs and people there, it may be worth the cost and the 'junk' food temporarily. Finding a diet that works to lose weight is difficult, I tried tons before losing the weight, and currently (hopefully) keeping it off.

Long-term, do you know how you put it on? I was a classic stress nibbler on biscuits, plus being brought up in a family where you never left an empty plate. Learning to leave food on a plate, because it was better in the bin instead of on my waist took a while!!

Now I basically stick to the governments 5 day, fruit & veg idea, have a steamer & a griddle pan and trying to watch portion sizes. I eat more fish & vegetarian, less cheap meat, and try not to eat too much processed food with hidden sugar/fat/calories. Kept the weight off for 18 months now, but have to watch the scales regularly, relapses are easy.

Sorry if it sounds like I'm on a constant diet, it's not like that at all. It's more a case of balancing the 'naughties' out with the 'nicer', and also appreciating that a nice tuna steak is just as nice as a cream bun in it's own way!!

Thats what Im doing too, am also looking to up my exercise. I do 30mins in the morning - dont laugh, I use BodyHeat program on Live!Tv and have a programme at the gym twice a week. Also walk briskly for about 10 - 15 mins daily. But I want something I can do outside the gym as well, may be doing more walking at the weekends cos I do love a good hike, weather permitting :D

I have to say, that the support on weight loss thread is great and I've managed to lose 9lb in 3 weeks just through cutting out crisps, choc, sweets and by eating more veg, pasta, rice etc.

    Excercise Excercise Excercise!

I've just lost a stone and it's all down to excercise. I run for 20 minutes twice a week on a treadmill, do 300 sit ups a week, do some gentle weights and I go for a run when I can manage it. I eat what I did before but slightly less now ie 2 slices of toast instead of 3 for breakfast. I still eat roast dinners and bars of chocolate but I make sure that I excercise when I can.

I don't/can't do diets, I hate being told what I should and shouldn't be eating. I just can't be @rsed with looking at fat and calories and I won't weigh stuff because life's too short.

Weight loss is a multi million pound business because we are told that it's so hard to lose weight and that we need clubs, shakes, ready meals and plans. Well we don't, we just need to eat less and move more. What's the point in having a measured calorie intake if all we do is sit on our bums in front of the telly? We should eat 'normally' (ie not too much, not too little) and build some excercise into our lives.

    rant over :D;)

i have at least 4 stone to lose 6 if you go by doctors charts but will be happy at 9st.the trouble is low fat foods are double the price and dont taste nice either they also make you hungrier.if i walk everywhere next week i can easily tot up 12 miles.has anyone worked out how many miles the 10,000 steps are that your meant to do each day it is a 3 mile walk to the school and back so if i done that 2 a day that would be six miles a day.also i got to college 3 days a week which is another 3 miles but could you actually manage to walk 9 miles a day without collapsing in a heap i would be fit for nothing else.i really think my weight problem is down to being lazy rather than eating.when i got walking before i got down to 11st4 without dieting i go to aerobics on a thursday and have enrolled for yoga in september i have lost 51b in two weeks but i was so starving all the time all i could think about was food so i am going to get of my bum someone kick it please.

If I need to lose weight I tend to cut starchy carbs out in the evening.
I'll start the day witha big bowl of porridge, maybe a sandwich (brown bread) for lunch & then for the evening meal I have a piece of meat/fish with as much veg as I can stomach (no potatoes). For snacks I stick to the odd bit of fruit (don't like fruit or veg much), but I don't feel guilty if I have a piece of chocolate or whatever.

This works for me and I can lose about 4lb within the first couple of days (nostly water) and then normally 1-2lb per week after that.

I find that the hardest thing about dieting is that it makes you hungry! I am a classic comfort/boredom eater. The more busy I am the less I have the temptation to snack. I try to fill my evenings - even if it is just doing the ironing while watching tv - I can't eat if I am doing something with my hands already. I think someone on this board even suggested giving yourself a pedicure while watching TV - again means your hands/mind are busy.

If I am full and just want to 'snack' I go an brush my teeth. The peppermint flavour kills the urge to eat chocolate or crisps!

Remember to drink lots of water. very often we aren't actually hungry - just thirsty.

    best of luck

been doing some more thinking about this and although this may not work for everybody it might for some.....

set a goal, not to lose weight but to be fit (bear with me)

I had two goals, to lose weight for my wedding and to run a race which I'd entered.

I figured that if I didn't lose weight for my wedding well....it wouldn't be the end of the world and I could hold my tummy in for the photos....

    but......

if I didn't do some training for the race I would've collapsed and looked a right idiot and everyone would laught at me..

    so.....

I ran, went to the gym and trained....lo and behold I've lost the weight anyway without it being the main objective.

So maybe if you entered a fun run, (something like the race for life that's just been run) or make it your goal to run 3 miles in say 30 minutes. Maybe that would be more beneficial than trying to lose a stone.

    Does that make sense?
Just run, run and keep on running!

Try keeping a food diary for a few days so you can see exactly what you are eating, then it is easier to work out where you are going wrong. I managed to lose about 7lbs this year purely by eating healthily, a nice bones as i was doing it to improve my skin which also worked. I have kept it up for a few months now, but am going to need to start exercising cos I'm feeling a little unfit! Here's an idea what I eat, today -

breakfast - 1 weetabix, semi skimmed milk & glass of fresh orange juice
lunch - mixed salad with cheese and a little low fat mayo
dinner - chicken curry (not strictly healthy!)
snacks - raspberries, pineapple chunks and I've also had a bit of millionaire shortbread a colleague made!

I find the only way I can eat healthily and get my 5 a day in is to plan ahead, I have my fruit in little tubs to take to work and after carrying them there I definately eat them. Actually find it harder when i'm at home! I try to plan lunches and dinners a week in advance and do a big shop.
