Oh heck! That's maybe a tad more than I was thinking of. :rotfl:

Thanks everyone, good to know it's an option.
Thought it might be! If you passed your test a good few years ago its always surprising what you can drive!

    Sadly, I'm well over 25. :)

I passed my test in 1988.

You can drive up to 7.5 tonnes however most van hire companies no longer hire out 7.5 tonners due to VOSA having a clamp down on haulage companies hiring them out in order to get around operator licence restrictions.

Well having announced my intentions of hiring a van to my OH on the phone, he's now decided he'll take a couple of days off to come back to drive the van himself.

I'm not sure if he's being chivalrous or if he's really just making a veiled inference about the thought of me driving something bigger than a car. :rotfl:

I'll likely still need to go hire the thing and pick it up though. Will phone round a few places today to see what's available.

Thanks again for all your help.

Make sure you are both named drivers on the hire company's paperwork, then. Unless you tell them, they may assume it's you that will be driving if you're picking it up, and your OH won't be allowed to drive it. It's been a while since I hired a van, but they wanted to see the license of anyone that was going to be driving.

Worth bearing in mind ( depending on how much stuff you'll be shifting ), 7.5 tonners often have a tail-lift, which is a godsend if you're moving lots of heavy furniture ( you'll probably need to ask for a tail-lift van specifically, a lot of hire places have them with and without ).
