Have you read Welcome to Holland? I read it in the late 80's, and it's still as powerful today. Just a short passage, here it is:

I am a single mother of 2 and my youngest daughter has just been diagnosed with severe learning disabilities and autism. Could anyone let me know what I would be entitled to ?
I already get income support and housing/council tax benefit, child tax credit and benefit, just wondering what she would be entitled to which we could then use for any adjustments I would need to make at home and also transport costs to her special school if that's where she'll go, I'm not too sure yet.
    Thanks

Get yourself on to the National Autistic Society forums. We have max care and mobility for our son but it was one hell of a fight. The help from NAS was invaluable.

If she is statemented, it helps a great deal. In your application send off absolutely everything you were given from the statement process - we sent off a wad of reports from child behaviour, pediatrics, social services etc that was a good inch thick.

It refers to a statement of special needs.

This is the direct gov website explanation.

Here is info on statementing: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Parents/Schoolslearninganddevelopment/SpecialEducationalNeeds/DG_4000870

My 9 year old has been getting DLA for about 3 years now, although he isn't statemented. He was also awarded DLA when he was around 2 but we let it lapse when it came to reapplying as we had a very good income back then, and could afford whatever he needed. The biggest help for me in explaining what is needed to complete the forms was the CEREBRA site-it really does break down how you need to answer the questions.

    http://www.cerebra.org.uk/English/getinformation/publications/Pages/DLAGuide.aspx

I keep a diary now, it makes it so much easier to fill out the forms when you get them. Also-keep copies of EVERYTHING you send, as they can easily go missing- you may also need to refer to a previous application when filling in a subsequent renewal and they may not be able to send you copies. I did mine online last time-it made it so much easier, and I was able to keep a copy on a media stick.
Tomorrow is always fresh, with no mistakes in it!
