Warning: Have you noticed street lights being dimmer?

Hi there, I'm not sure if this is the right category or not so forgive me if it's wrong but I thought I should maybe post and see if this is something that's affected anyone else? I may be wrong, but I could swear the street lights where I am are a lot dimmer than they used to be and when I came home tonight, I found I very hard to see anything and had to use my phone to be able to see the socket to put my key in. I actually felt a little intimidated when I was outside because it was really dark and I could barely see my hands which means I wouldn't have been able to identify anybody else should something have happened to me getting between my car and my house.

Now that I'm indoors, I've had a good chance to look through the blinds and all the lights in my street are very dim, almost as if they've been turned down to a low setting or something. I know I'm not losing my mind (at least I hope I don't) so is there something happening in the country that I'm not aware of? this is only something I've noticed over the last few weeks or so and it wasn't until tonight I realised just how dark it was outside, even with the street lights on. I think I may well have to carry a torch with me in future just to be on the safe side.

Thank you, hope this posting is helpful to you :) xxx

Not round my way - in fact, quite the opposite. Two of the orange sodium street lights in my neighbourhood have been replaced - with what appears to be superbright white lights - I think they might be halogen lights, but I can't be sure.

It may depend a bit on moon phase too - some nights are MUCH darker than others! As for the lamps being dimmer, I suppose it is possible,, but the would have to change the bulbs to dimmer ones, it is not just a case of turning the dimmer switch down!

we have the supposedly improved LED street lights here. great for cutting energy use etc but they are a nasty cold bluish white light rather than the cheerful orange sodiums of old. It is possible to get "warm white" leds but maybe the local council here weren't that clued up when they ordered them

The streetlight just outside my bedroom window still shines just as brightly as it's always done:mad:.

I reckon the OP is correct - her lights may well be dimmer! I live in Cornwall and apparently 30,000 of our streets lights have been 'dimmed'. My DH says there was an article in the paper a few days ago which gave a list of the Councils that were dimming street lighting.

If you Google 'street lighting dimmed' there are a load of references to various councils which are doing/considering this.

I dont really have many nearby street lights, only 2 in the culdisack where I live, I rely on the motion sensor floodlight that I installed above my own door.

No street lights here only stars.
I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.
