My Nan ans Grandad bought all three of us (my brother, sister and I) our own giant teddy. They were all kept at my Nans house and I personally played and slept with mine when i was there. I have great memories of playing teaparty and school etc with it. My Nan gave me mine about a year ago, now that 'I'm all grown up and live in my own house'. It's sat in my bedroom in pride of place and i will continue to love it due to all the memories. Maybe you could do something like that.

I got my nephew all the first day covers of stamps for the year he was born as a one off. His parents continued this but on subscription so he gets a nice present through the post every couple of months.

ETA: I also considered a special edition of coins in circulation for the year he was born, also from Royal Mail. My Mum got him every newspaper for the day he was born and his other grandparents bought him the top 10 cd singles for the week he was born.
    Whatever

What about naming a star after him and giving him the certificate and map showing where his star is when he is older?

Have spotted some name a star gift sets on my travels through t'internet looking for Christmas presents this past wee while but can't remember where I seen them. May have been Amazon.

My mum bought all her grandsons a pewter tankard when they were born. Obviously this was put away for them for when the were old enough to drink but it was lovely, especially as my mum has now passed away. She also bought them all a traditional growling teddy bear which is a tradition that my sister and I have kept going.

My parents bought my little boy a personalised toy box when he was born. Firstly I used it as a clothes chest now it takes pride of place in his room, he loves it - Although it has it's name on it I hope he'll pass it down to his children when the time comes.

It was expensive but the workmanship on it is amazing and it'll last forever.

I bought silver propelling pencils from Yard-o-led for our two nephews. I thought that a pen may have a problem with ink after 20 years, but a pencil should remain in perfect condition.

When my children were born I bought each of them a plant with the same name and both now love telling their friends that is their special plant ,The R.H.S is a useful site and usually a name has several plants ,flowers ,trees or bushes you could choose from.
