Cat flea collar

Options
The Cat (that's his name :o) has had a flea collar on since November last year. I've decided to order some Frontline as he's been scratching himself a lot lately & I'm pretty sure he's got some little beasties taking up residence _pale_

Does anyone know if it's safe to administer Frontline (the one that goes on the back of the cat's neck) while he's still got the collar on?? I'm pretty sure the collar was only 'active' for 3 or 6 months - I bought it from Home Bargains if that helps. I don't really want to take the collar off him if possible as it's got a bell on & I don't want him to start sneaking up on unsuspecting birdies!!

Sorry but flea collars do diddly squat. Except annoy the cat and often leave a ring of bald fur :(

    They just don't work

Take it off, administer the frontline (onto SKIN not fur - easier said than done), and get him a bog standard safety collar with a bell.

Edited to add - it is actually branded Frontline you have got as a spot on? Not stuff from a supermarket pet shop?

Sorry if I am preaching to the converted, but pet shop/supermarket stuff is false economy - doesn't work, and can actually be harmful to cats - just google bob martins reaction - once you get past all the selling sites its a sad story :( I have seen at least 3 cats die from this (I'm a vet nurse)

Make sure whetever you use is from a vet or pharmacy, as otherwise a) it won't work, and b) it may be harmful.

    Hope that helps!

To save a bit of cash don't actually buy the Frontline branded product but another very similar product with the same main ingredient. It's just been unlicensed so anyone can now make it. It's called fipronil. I've just purchased 4 pippetes of Effipro containing fipronil costing £10.21 it's quite a bit cheaper than Frontline and it's exactly the same stuff. Fiproline is another product. Keep the collar on if you want, if only for the bell. It will have lost any flea deterrent many months ago.

No, do not keep the collar on as any residual chemicals may react with the spot on treatment!

Otherwise, sound advice about looking for an alternative fipronil product - BUT be sure that it originates from the UK, and has been correctly stored prior to shipping.

Welcome! :) Please only use quick-release collars on cats so they don't strangle getting caught on a branch; if they are good hunters they learn to move stealthily without ringing the bell anyway. If there is evidence of fleas on your cat and you haven't been zapping them regularly, your whole home will be infested so that will need treating too. Don't forget to use a good wormer on the cat as fleas carry worm eggs.

    Thank you everyone :)

tankgirl1, that's what I was worried about, the collar possibly reacting with the Frontline so I'll take it off before I use it. It is definitely Frontline, I ordered it from Amazon as I'd seen someone else on MSE mention getting it from there, still hasn't arrived yet so I've got time to buy another collar with a bell, any recommendations there?? I've never bought one before as we have always had indoor cats previously so this is all new to us.

Fire Fox, I've been hoovering like a mad woman just incase any beasties have come into the house. I'm pretty sure there will be some. I know there's a spray I can get, any recommendations for that & where to buy would be gratefully received as well.

I did wonder about worming as well - should that be done at the same time as the Frontline & can it be put in the same place on the back of the neck?? I would rather use the liquid than tablets - he doesn't take kindly to taking tablets.

Thanks again everyone for your help.

I am totally against collars on cats as well, even the quick release ones as i've heard of instances of them not releasing. As long as your cat is microchipped, I can see no useful purpose in sticking a collar round their neck. ;)

Sorry, don't know the name of the house spray to treat against fleas but I would suggest you get a new flea collar and stick it in your hoover bag!
Some flea treatments also treat for ear mites and worms, the info with the treatment will tell you what.
For collars the quick release one I have for my cat is Ancol and widely available but don't put on the collar until the flea treatment has dried as it affects the plastic closure!

I'm with Tankgirl on this.Flea collars & all those 'products' you can buy from the local supermarket are a complete waste of time & money.I tried them all with my old mate Orbit,in the end Frontline was the only thing that worked.

Indorex for the house spray. Anything with a good dose of Permethrin in it will do. Don't spray it around the cats though get rid of them for a good few hours. VetUK £7.75.

Worming can be done at the same time. Put it in the food. Make sure cat is hungry first then he/she will munch it down. Comes in a tablet form and can be crunched up and mixed through.
