Cat Food

Our vet advised us not to feed our little darling wet food at all, except as an occasional treat, so he gets Hills. He'll eat most things except for raw meat. Loves tortilla crisps, cheese, yogurt and green vegetables (when he can steal them)!"Never argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level then beat you with experience." Anon.0

One of my boys eats birds, I've seen him do this twice now, he eats the lot, including the indigestable bits like the wings, tail and feet.
Does he bring these up later a bit like an owl pellet or do they go through his system?
He sounds really gross but he's a beautiful cream cat with a lovely housecat personality, he just goes a bit Ray Mears sometimes.0 -

Having had a cat which suffered with crystals in the urethra (?) I am trying to avoid this, so like him having the moisture but am at a loss how to get him to eat the crunchie things. Maybe I should just put them down and give the wet once a day. What do you think? This cat seems to want to eat about 5 times a day!!!
Hi Larmy
One of my boys has had bladder crystals too and is on Hills CD and loves it, he also has had Royal Canin Urinary.
Maybe you can mix a little of the wet food with the dry, gradually increasing the proportion of the dry?0 -
now dont shoot me down in flames, but im not really a cat person:)
however.....
i am a sucker for abandoned animals and a friend asked me to have his cat last summer, so ellie came to live with me:) she is actually very sweet and loveable, but i know nothing about cats:D
i give her a tin of food (she eats anything) half in the morning and half in the evening, and fresh water.
is she meant to have those cat crunchie things? is a dry food better for her?
i will admit to giving her a tin of tuna when ive run out of cat food (was this a bad thing to do?)
crikey! im such a cat novice, although i will say one thing, out of all the pets i have had she is def the easiest and most affectionate:D
some advice on my moggie would be appreciated:)

Tuna is fine as a treat.
Dry food is supposed to be better for the digestive system and seems to fill cats up more (it expands in the stomach).
Why not get a few small dry trial bags and see how it goes? Try a few and get a dental one to help scour the teeth and prevent gingivitis.
There's a thread on here somewhere about dry foods and which are the best/most ethical. IAMS didn't come out very well i remember, something about animal testing and too much addictive ingredient.0 -
My cats love James Wellbeloved dry food, if you look up the JWB website, you can send away for free samples of there dog and cat foods. I've done this a few times now, they dont seem to have a limit to how many times you can apply. My last cat was very fussy, but she also loved JWB.
They also have tinned food, but I change this every few weeks, as they do tend to get boreif I stick to the same kind

Our lot adore James Wellbeloved and also go wild for Royal Canin. By the way the very handsome fellow on my avatar is Livingstone, the boy that started us buying dry food in the first place! Handsome eh?Blind as you run...aware you were staring at the sun.
And when no hope was left inside on that starry starry night.

He is supposed to be on a prescription diet too for urinary problems but he will not eat it.
You do have to be careful with portion sizes of the iams though as they gain weight vary quickly on it.
are you just switching the cat over to the new food or mixing it in gradually?
Mind not eating the wet food is a bit odd. Our kittens didn't much bother with their wet iams kitten food at first but then I stuck the sachet thing on the radiator to warm it up one day and they started going mental as soon as I opened it and they got a whiff of the smell. It's not easy having a good time. Even smiling makes my face ache.0 -

Hes gorgeous Annie
Mine also like Royal Canin, the bag they're eating at the moment had 50% extra free :money: its the first time they've had it as we usually just stick to the JWB.

If you mix any form of oil (sardines etc) with dry food then just be prepared for the BM which follow;) - I had an older dog (retriever sized) (sadly now with the angels) who attempted to go through a cat flap in order to do their duty due to me supplementing their diet with fish oils:o
After trying lots of different cat foods, both wet and dry, the mogs appear to prefer Lidl (!) Majestic complete dry food, in preference to Burns, IAMS, Whiskas, James Wellbeloved etc.
I also put out wet food - their favourite is Lidl brand, and they will eat this in preference to Felix, Whiskas, Tescos etc.
I agree with MATH about the water - I give mine water from the rain water butt / empty watering can I leave in the garden, as they HATE clean tap water.
My dog was on Royal Canin (prescription only and ye gods the cost!!). I switched him to Burns and he had been absolutely fine and loves Burns. If you have an older cat / dog, it may help to soak the complete dry food in hot water for a few minutes to soften it up.0
