Going to run combofix now.

Machine went haywire during combofix so have run a system restore now. Still no ability to run installations.

I think my original advice of completely reinstalling (and wiping the MBR with FIXMBR) is probably the way to go

Russ you and I had this machine running perfectly two or three weeks ago. As the user (and a pretty experienced one) I don't think it needs a re-installation. Perhaps running the repair console and using FIXMBR might help the (still) exisiting bootup problem but the machine was running like a drema until a couple of days ago. I want to know what the hell has got into it.

That odd file is a copy of the latest version of MS Windows Installer. I can't install it. I don't have 5 Explorer windows open. I have one window open with 5 tabs.

Okay good, that's normal behaviour - each new tab can open in a new process, from IE8 onwards.
