When A Child Leaves Full Time Education?

I currently get WTC/CTC and HB/CTB for my 18 year old daughter because she was still in Full Time Education. Her time in College finished a couple of weeks ago although she will still get her EMA until the middle of July when her Course officially finishes. Do I tell Tax Credits and the HB that she is not in College now? She isn't signing on but she is just waiting to hear from University now after when she sends them her UCAS points. I Can't find anything on the Gov website about when I need to contact the Tax Credit office and HB.

I asked the lone parent advisor about this on Wednesday, she said that the CB and CTC end on the 31st August.

DD is planning to go to uni in October, but obviously it's dependant on her getting the grades the Uni have told her they want. If she doesn't get them then she will be going back to sixth form in September and the lone parent advisor said I can continue to claim CTC and CB for her.

She said that if she does get the grades then to give CT a ring as soon as we know to avoid an overpayment, but payments should continue until 31st August.

If your child is intending to continue in full time education child benefit and Child Tax Credits can/will continue over the summer.

You should inform CTC and CB of this.

also if they are over 18 they will continue to be disregarded for Council Tax as long as CB remains in payment for them.

I received a letter from CB who says her payments stop on 5th September so thats when i inform Council tax yes? What happens if and when she goes Uni, will she get a second adult rate? If my daughter doesn't get the amount of UCAS points the Uni is asking for could she go back to 6th form then instead of signing on the dole? She doesn't want to claim benefits at all and she is also 6 weeks pregnant. How would she stand with the UNI or 6th form when she is pregnant? Again she doesn't want to go on benefit and she wants to continue studying.

Also anyone classed as a full time student is disregarded for council tax regardless of age.

I think thats something that you will have to discuss with the college. I presume she's intending to continue with the pg, she will have to take into account when she will be due and how it will impact on her studies.

I fell pg with my dd when I was taking my A-levels, when I first found out I thought my due date would have been after my exams, so planed to continue with them, but when I got my dating scan I discovered I was actually almost 6 months pg and and was due in March, so it wasn't possible for me to continue.

Assuming that your daughter is single and planning to continue with the pregnancy she will be able to claim additional funding on top of her student loan /grant after the baby's born.

Unless she does really badly in her exams, it could be worth her while going through Clearing for other courses/universities, rather than doing resits - I'm sure you know about the increasing cost of fees in 2012.

Full time education is not the only qualifier, it also has to be allowed courses. Any degree course means that the benefits will stop.

I am also unsure why your daughter is allowed to claim EMA now she is nit at college, as payments are dependent on actually being at college each day - it matters not when the course officially finishes, the fact is, she has finished.

The college would illegally have to be filling in the time sheets if she were still in receipt of it, stating she was there each day when she is not. This can also be classed as fraud. I have had two through college, both cases EMA was stopped the week after they left ( as they are paid a week behind) and they left before official course end date.

EMA is not payable during term holidays, and certainly not when your daughter is not attending.

Your payments will stop for child benefit on August 31 along with any other child related benefits as she will be classed as a non dependent.

If she is intending to return to college then you need to let them know but she will need to re- enrol amd ensure it is a course that is allowed.
