  • Sainsbury's Basic cooking bacon. 670 gm for £1.09. I have always bought it to chop up into pieces and fry, then store in a box in the freezer to add to pasta dishes, omelettes, quiche etc. However, just recently I have been finding gammon joint ends in there, sometimes up to 3 in a pack. As good as buying small gammon or bacon steaks at a fraction of the price! If you look at the packs carefully you can make out if there are any thicker pieces in them. Plus they are usually quite lean pieces!

I can add Tesco Value Macaroni Cheese ready meal to the YES list. 400g > 80p. Taste's pretty good IMO!

Bought Tesco value washing powder for the first time > that is the next test!

Aldi's and Lidl's is good it's a bit combination Some things are better in Aldi's and vice-versa...

    In Brief Aldi/Lidl...

    Mince: Lidl
    Chicken: Aldi
    Seafood: Aldi
Fridge food/ready meals/pies/sausages/bacon etc: Aldi (Esp in Scotland lot's of Scottish makes)
    Tinned stuff: Lidl
    Fruit/Veg: Depends (just Lidl)
    Cleaning Products: Aldi
    Hair/beauty/smellies etc: Aldi
    Most Cheese: Avoid both
    Pasta Sauce: Lidl

Freezer stuff don't tend to buy in either.

  • Tesco Everyday Value - More good stuff!

    Value Frying Steaks - 3/4 in a pack - £2.75 (roughly weight)
Value Stir Fry mix - £1 (bit bigger pack size than the dearer one and tastes the same!)

Value Washing Powder - 85p for 13 Washes... Does the job, if your clothes don't have super mega stains - superb!

I've little doubt that it's been mentioned already, but I wanted to chip in a vote for Tesco Everyday Value Cornflakes.

35p a box (500g I think, maybe 750g, don't have a box to hand to check) but unlike a lot of value brands these are indistinguishable from Kellog's.

Trust me, try them and you'll never want any other brand.

Having used Asda for the past couple of weeks for the weekly shop instead of Tesco - it's clear to me that since the 'Everyday Value rebrand' that range in terms of taste and quality is well ahead of Smart Price now...

In Asda past couple of week's smart price wise i have bought: Chicken Breasts, Bacon, soft cheese. All far inferior tasting to Tesco Everyday Value. Orange Juice from Concentrate - 62p - only 50% juice rest filled with water etc - tesco is 100% juice for same price.
