I have a Samsung D500 on orange and from a link on this site I have visited http://www.freefonesoftware.co.uk/phone_unlocking/unlock_samsung.html
If I download this software and connect a lead from my computer to the phone via usb will this suffice as a unlock cable?

nope you've got to use the serial cable available on ebay
(I'm not so sure about the USB unlock cable on ebay) I'm sure there is one that will also supply you with instructiosn and software.0
