I actually hide money in my wallet lol. I hoard English notes for when we are on the mainland, and i 'forget' the money is there ;-) Right now, I forget that I have 40 quid there ;-0 Then I have it when I need it.

I also keep from 10-50 in a drawer in the kitchen. For energency school dinner money etdc if I don't have change (or I only have my English notes lol). I use it til it is up, and it is only replenished when one of the kids owes me money ( i get that in cash) so I keep it there for emergencies. They end up owingme money when they want stuff, and I won't give it to them cuz it isn't Bday or xmas. So they have to pay for it when I order it (usually online where it is cheaper). Then they moan they have no money, but I am pretty hard with them about not getting stuff when they don't need it.

I'm really surprised how many people keep money at home. No wonder the burglars are still in business. I have a few quid in my purse and use cards mostly. I don't think I'll change either.

Just as a side note when travelling it is always a good idea to carry a false wallet containing dummy documents that look official, e.g. expired credit cards, high denomination notes that are worthless etc so if you were ever mugged you could give them the fake wallet.

Just a idea I picked up once somewhere cannot remember where though.

...hmmmm...and would they notice a little "zumsing extra" for their troubles (ie stealing one's wallet) - ie a note saying JUST what one was wishing on them for being a thief...:rotfl:...naughty ceridwen...slap wrists again time..:rotfl:

THRILLA - I havent seen you around these parts for AGES - where ya' been? Welcome back.

Have a few hundred in case we need it. When would that be ? maybe going to the airport and you've forgot to go to the cashpoint the night before and need to pay the taxi. Perhaps one of the kids needs cash and you haven't enough, all manner of things actually.

Gold is not PROOF against inflation, or even capital erosion. Check its history going back more than just the last 10 years.

OK, Ark Welder. Anything you say.

Some great stories that have me feeling all nostalgic!

My grandparents had a very fluffy sheepskin rug in front of the fire, right between their two armchairs. There was a small depression in the floor created by my Gramps and they kept all their cash right there. And it was a LOT (thousands). Gran would get all their various pensions at the beginning of the week and after spending £30 or so on a weeks Spam and stuff, the rest would be neatly stored away under the rug.

They were both savvy, had all their marbles and regularly read financial pages of newspapers, just had a total hatred of banks. I told them once that they could always leave it with the Post Office to look after and they patted me on the head, explaining that they did in fact have a couple of those ERNIE bonds for "back-up".

They are long gone now but I inherited the rug. Only thing under it now though is dog hairs :D

    I agree with MrsRogers.

It seems, from reports in our local paper which appear with depressing regularity, that some older people DO keep money in the home. They become victims of 'opportunist' or 'distraction' burglars. Someone rings your doorbell, pretends from the water board or similar, or asks if they can use your bathroom. An accomplice then gets in and robs you. What's interesting about all these reports is that the victim usually says 'but they were only in there for a couple of minutes'. Which implies that the burglars knew exactly where the victim's money/valuables were kept, in some obvious place and didn't need to spend time searching.

Ask yourself the question, where would I hide my money in the house, I bet many come up with the same answer for hiding places. Burglars know these places.
