Swapped to British Gas on 16/6/2011 - Can I cancel now?

  • The whole energy market is a joke.
I am with British Gas, have been for 15 years and find them the lesser of the other 5 evils.
Once Scottish Power put their prices up I knew the writing was on the wall so signed up to a fixed deal with BG until March 2013, which supposedly is the longest deal on the market so I know I am covered against all price rises until then.

When BG put The problem with switching back to NPower again is that once the move to BG is complete, you will probably have to wait a few weeks again until NPower take over your supply, who knows what their rates will be then.

The rest of the Big 6 are sure to follow suit now.

I have to admit, I am an old fashioned BG customer. One of the main reasons I am with them is that they are a British company and as daft or xenophobic as it may sound, I feel secure knowing that.

PS Just got the date to have my walls and loft insulated for free by them.

I've written to Audrey Gallacher, Head of energy policy at Consumer Focus, and the Confidence Code Manager at Consumer Focus about the anti competive nature of Temination Fees on variable priced contracts.

I will report back their response.

Wow. Just signed up to moneysavingexpert and this is the first thing I see

You appear to have mental health issues relating to anger. I suggest you seek some help with that before concentrating on such things as gas and electricity?

    :)

Agree and also reported, although DA was reacting to criticism, a favourite pastime of certain people.

The post that DA was responding too was bad as well, but appears to have already been removed.

The moderators have now removed the offensive posts but unfortunately are still visible due to being quoted. Best never to respond to or quote trolls, just report them

This whole raft of of customer rights in the event of a supplier raising prices on what are "Variable" contracts has only surfaced fairly recently, and the reason is that no matter what the suppliers put in their T&C's, customers have woken up to the fact that they must conform to estabilished contract law.

Contract law allows customers to refuse to accept what is actually a new contract with higher prices: Hence the short the notice period of refusal and right to Switch conditition appearing in the T&C's.

The Utilities are perfectly aware that it is they who have renaged on the original contract, yet still try to gather exit fee's with this wonderfully wooly term "Cancellation fee's may apply" - In other words we will try to get away with it if we can
If they charge it, don't pay it and Complain. This site is full of reports of customers who have successfully done just that, but I've not seen one report where the supplier has refused to back down

Just off the phone with British Gas and they have confirmed I can leave and no mention of any charges!

I specifically asked would I be charged any fines or cancellation fees and was told No!

The operator just kept saying sorry the prices had to go up.
