Even if they do charge you the exit fee, you're still going to be £20 better off, so why worry? No free lunch, and no free laptop

Yeah i thought that, but i also have £30 topcashback on the original BG transfer, so if I don't get that I will be £10 worse off!
i did think I could ditch the npower fixed and go with the EDF fixed which was actually £10 cheaper than npower and then I could claim another cashback on that deal.
At least with npower the deal I agreed with them today is in a 12 day cooling off period, so I can get out of that one easily.
I'll give BG a few days next week and see what they come back with.0 -
Don't speak with customer service deal with customer relations (I feel thats the best way to get things resolved.) Myself and backfoot have recently left EDF with no penalty due a change in contract e.g penalty.
So BG may budge on these circumstances however all suppliers will rise prices within the next month. So pick a deal EDF fix V2 is the most competitve fix atm however I opted for the Sp 2012 Direct tariff which has been withdrawn. (Very fast.) so pick what ever tariff suits your needs !

May being the operative word.
How can you have a contract saying something may happen?
Against an increase from the starting position of a 1/5th increase in the essential part of the contract, they are hedging their bets against a challenge in law.
They would cave in rather than face a precedent.
Why do you think EDF and SP have conceded switches recently and waived the exit fees?
I am still in contract with BG until Oct and obviously do not want to pay the exit fee of 2 x £30 for duel fuel.
I sent them a message yesterday saying I was changing supplier (going for fixed). Received a reply saying they do not want to lose me and credited my gas account with £30.
Usual bumpf about having to raise prices but no threat of exit fees so will wait and see what happens when I switch.0 -

They don't need to threaten you with exit fees. If it's a part of your contract (i.e in the t&c's), the exit fee will be automatically applied.
You may not want to pay the exit fees, but if YOU chose to sign up to that tariff, then quite rightly, YOU should be paying (and will be) those fees.
You can't just have your cake and eat it.0 -

Seem to know it all! As other posters have pointed out the wording is exit fee MAY be applied. Time will tell and even so I get £30 to change and BG £30 credit so not over concerned.0 -
So in theory.......
Could an energy company bring out a tariff that is so cheap it comes top of all the comparison sites by a country mile, get loads of people signing up to it, with huge get-out fee's, then once they have plenty of sign-up's, whack the price up 47%?????“Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?”

Yup!
As long as they wait for the cooling off period to finish before they increase the prices, then the "cancellation fee" that the customer "agreed" to in the T&C's is valid.0 -
Makes you wonder, after the rate rise announcement yesterday, how many ill informed people will be swopping from British Gas variable to another company variable scheme without comprehending that the 'others' will be increasing their rates by similar amounts in the next few weeks.0
