Is this even possible?
I have no idea - I'm not very clever with things like this!
I was thinking of a dongle thingymajiggy?
My daughter has just moved into her first flat. There is no landline & she doesn't really need one.
But, she's 19....she obviously NEEDS internet!

If anyone could advise me if it's possible then that would be great.
If anyone can advise me how to do it for as little as possible in cost that would be super dooper ever so lovely
Thanks in advance for any help

Sometimes it's important to work for that pot of gold...But other times it's essential to take time off and to make sure that your most important decision in the day simply consists of choosing which color to slide down on the rainbow...

Hi
I also have no landline and so I use a dongle (mobile broadband). The first one I got was an O2 but it didn't work (i later found out it did not cover my area), and I now have a Vodafone dongle which seems to work ok. It's good enough for general internet usage but I find it's not really up to watching videos on the net and also I can't download large files as the connection's not good enough.
I'd recommend putting her postcode into the company website of the dongle you're thinking of getting just to check the area coverage.

Thank you

She doesn't download stuff and it would only be for facebook, email and general browsing etc so it would sound like a dongle would be fine.
Thanks for your help

I agree, did the same for a short while on a new laptop, while out and about.
Bought a 3 dongle and 3GB SIM card (for up to 3 months surfing) from Three, but then bought a new SIM from Amazon, which was far cheaper, such as here (50% cheaper than Three site)

Good luck !0 -
For mobile broadband:
Go to Site Finder, click on the map and pop the relevant postcode in the box.
A map should appear, hopefully with some blue triangles.
You'll need to click on each of the blue triangles in turn, reading the details.
What you are looking for are UMTS masts under 'type of transmission' within 500 metres of the place of intended usage and the name of the operator.
Report back with the name of the network/s closest to your daughter's home. UMTS masts only.0 -

Orange.
Those are the closest 3.
Although I searched the 02 site and it said 'We recommend O2 Mobile Broadband for this postcode and predict that speeds will be good'
Easily confused? Me? YEP!

Are they within 500 metres?
The easiest option is to get a single network modem. Such as suggested, a 3 modem with some prepaid data and when that has been used up, using the SIM indicated in post #4. A 3UK starter kit can be purchased for £16 here.
A more versatile option would be to purchase an 'unlocked' modem(one not tied to any network). That way you can use any UK data SIM, and many data SIMs worldwide to connect to the Internet. The main proviso would be that one would have to enter the network connection details manually on first connection. The unlocked modem is here @ £14
Perhaps put both options to your daughter to see what she thinks.0 -

Thank you for your help - much appreciated.
My daughter has learning difficulties which is why I'm doing this on her behalf....otherwise I'd be making her research it herself
I'll have a better look tomorrow - moving her into her new flat today has been exhausting and I've been looking at dongles for so long I think I'm going to be counting them in bed soon...
I really appreciate your help

Could consider a mi-fi device especially if she has an ipod Touch or wi-fi Kindle. This allows any wi-fi device to connect to the internet via 3G.
Regardless of the method she adopts I would suggest she finds out where she can get free wi-fi if she wants to do more than browse the net and download music0 -
I dont have a landline and I dont have a dongle. I had virgin media fit a fibre optic cable for my broadband as I knew it would be ok without a landline. (we just have a mobile as our main phone)
