I'm considering applying for one of the savings accounts.

Do you have to post off your original ID documents along with the application form?

I opened my account in branch

The OP sent certified copies by post

I would just send a photocopy of ID - you will know soon enough

Indian Banks (eg State Bank of India) aren't too fussy according to this

I found that UK residents don't need certified documents

http://www.sbiuk.com now offer a mastercard debit card on their savings and current accounts and internet banking is fully functional google "sbi uk mastercard" using image search
(they have impressive internet banking , although you would not guess from the log in page)

credit reference search is an "Identification generic" check via Experian - I have an account with this bank

Bank of Baroda Debit card transactions appear on statements in the format ;time ,date and reference number - the name and location of the merchant does not appear (useful for some people)

The card needs to be activated by phone , card services is open 24/7 (out of hours Scottish call centre)

The bank are flexible on ID and will accept other items if passport /driving licence not held

bonds can be opened via an online form https://www.bankofbarodauk.com/bmxacopn/acopn/bobmaxcmpn.aspx which asks for passport /driving licence number (I suspect that they check this)

another trick would be to open the bond online just to get a customer ID number (don't fund it -or send a £1 test payment) = foot in the door and use the existing customer route to get the savings account

The Indian banks are much more branch based than UK banks - the branch is the main point of contact - so choose your branch carefully

    Hi Dr_Cuckoo3

I didnt realise SBI also offer a Mastercard on their savings account, they have a branch around the corner from me.

I have looked through all the T&C's and Charging information available on their site but again cant find their foreign use loads/charges for the mastercard debit (maybe its old age on my part) I have downloaded every pdf and read and re-read the charges page.

Do you have any idea what it is?

Also is BACS the ONLY way to pay in, I saw they charge for cash at their branches, do they offer a BOB style arrangement with another bankby any chance?

    Cheers again

The charging information is in the booklet which accompanies the card at 4.5 , however it is not particularly clear

The card is unembossed , which is unusual

Internet banking can be used to transfer funds to other accounts at banks

SBI accepts faster payments inwards and at the end of the year they will have to send faster payments
